Any pointers you guys could give? I'm planning to transform my friends' downstairs room into a budget recording studio and it's my first time ever tackling this sort of project.

Are there any objectives that I should consider in the construction of this studio room? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'll update w/ some pics of the room as soon as i can.

Using nearfield monitors at reasonable levels can usually take most of the room out of the equation. If the room is finished in any way just set up the gear and don't worry about building the perfect monitoring environment --- most professional studios can't lay claim to perfection despite spending tens of thousands of dollars on, for example, getting Adobe earth trucked in from Arizona.

If you hear serious echoes or fluttering or your mixes just don't travel well, meaning they sound radically different when played on assorted systems, then post again and someone here will help you with some suggestions. Until you've done half a dozen projects in your prospective studio you're probably jumping the gun to try to treat it acoustically.

Alright thanks. Any idea what's the best monitors i can get for around 200 bucks?

M-audio makes some pretty nice cheap moniters that are active. If you want to not spend a lot just check out some passive ones by any company.
