I've delayed my purchase a few extra days... Based on the kind folks on this board, I've narrowed it down to these two. (VTB1/DMP3) I know that one (VTB1) is a one channel, but I can always buy two.

As to build quality, quietness, essential sound quality, neutrality which do you prefer?

I use SPB1 mikes. My primary uses are voice over, though other uses will come into play (recording piano, organ, choral). I don't know that I need to add "tube-ness", but I've heard great things about the VTB1. Also heard great things about the M-Audio...

Thank you DJL. I thought I might start screaming...

thanks for the link... i tried a search twice earlier, but kept getting no response, or the "too many people on site" message...

eh????

Bill, why do you need this pre-amp? I am specifically inquiring because I know we have the same recorder and I have heard your product and already like it. What will this preamp do that you can't do now?

Actually, I like the preamps on the Fostex VF80, but I imagine the VTB1 or DMP3 would be a tad better (quieter). The VTB1 would offer the opportunity to dial in some tube warmth/distortion (my son would like this for his guitar). But as an absolute necessity, I probably don't need a pre. When I choose one or the other, I'll do an a/b comparison, with and without, and let you know what I hear (or don't hear).

I'll tell you right up front... if you son is planning on using the VTB-1 as a DI/distortion box for his guitar, forget it... it sucks for that. He'd be better off getting a Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator or something like that.

Ya, I wouldn't use the vtb-1 for a guitar pre at all, or bass pre for that matter. But I love it for vocals.
