That's a huge leap. There is nothing inherently wrong with an SM57, Mexican or not. I'd suspect that preamp before I threw the 57 in the dustbin.

I think that would be a law suit in the making. It was done in Photoshop as a joke.... :)

That's my experience exactly. But that isn't necessarily a 'flaw' or 'fault' ... that's pretty much how SM57s sound. I can't quite quantify what is so much better about my old 545, but when I say I got rid of my 57s, you should bear in mind that I'm not a 57 fan anyway :)
 
The solution is to try out as many mics as you can and a favorite will just emerge. If you're using the mic for vocal recording, maybe the next thing to try would be a large diaphragm condenser.
