Studio Projects different DOTS?

Hi,

I ordered a second Studio Projects B1 condensor, so that I can stereo match them for drum overheads. First they sent me the wrong mic...then after specifically asking for a green dotted mic, they've sent me the right mic but with the red dot colour. Fools!

What is the deal with using different coloured dotted mics for stereo recording? Is it a big deal or should I take it back (which involves time and effort)?

many thanks

The company itself is pretty much owned / run by a bunch of rejects, so it's not surprizing. :D

Just kidding. Why don't you go stalk Al down and see if he can crack the whip and get something done for you (?). He's always up for scoring extra PR points on public discussion boards - I'm sure he'll jump at the opportunity, and you'll find him most eager to help.

The dots relate to matched output levels, not matched frequency reponse curves. If you do a search, I do recall that someone here posted a listing of the dB values for each dot color. My recollection is that the colors were within 2 dB of each other. If you're anal about the "The faders aren't even! The faders aren't even!" aspect (but not about PFL), then fuss about the matched dots.

If you're pissed that the vendor didn't give you a requested service, then, again, fuss over the matched dots. This may have changed due to vendor/consumer issues with messing with factory packaging, but, as I recall, the dots are on the Warranty stub and I also seem to remember that this was in a sealed baggie. You might have to mention this to your vendors, so that they can find the dot in the first place.

In the long run, I don't know if I would lose any sleep over it.*

* But then again, MY dots are matched---and they're the best color!

Geez, don't start this again. You can email Alan at alan@pmiaudio.com and they have a toll free number: 877.563.6335. Bitch about the dots to them, not here.

I just tested them out in what i would consider fairly accurately circumstances (set my preamp knob and faders in position, then put the mic in a locked off stand in front of an amp playing a beat from a drum machine. Then just swapped mics) From looking at the wave, the red dot is approx 1.5 db louder than the green dot. Im no audiophile, but id also swear it was a tiny little less bright as well... So should these slight differences worry me?

As for them getting the dot wrong, there's no excuse for not seeing it..Im from Australia, and the dots here are stuck on the front of the box plain as day.

thx guys

Call Mick at Front End..I am sure he will take care of you. Obviously something got lost in the ordering from him or the dealer, but Mick is a good guy and he would help out.

If you purchased them through a retail outlet, I'd be interested to know who that was.

thanks alanhyatt, but i dont really see how a guy in America is going to be able to help me out...Im in Australia after all. Ausrock, I dont want to bad-mouth businesses publicly, but if you really wanna know just send me a PM - btw it is not necesarrily the retail stores fault..it could be Studio Projects /the distributor in Australia?

But more the point is do u think it is necessary for me to bother with the effort and time of following this up? What would u do if u were in my shoes?

OK, if I understand your posts correctly, you ordered an SP B1 "Green Dot" and first you received some other mic, then when the store did send a B1, they managed to send a "Red Dot".

My first action would be to be contacting the store and politely ask them...............1) if they can explain why they haven't been able to fulfill the order correctly..................2) if they understand the significance of the different coloured dots on the packaging................and 3) ask them if they're prepared to rectify the mistakes..........then post their responses back here ;). BTW, feel free to PM me with the store's details.

Alan's Australian distributor is Front End Audio in Adelaide (NOT to be confused with the US Front End Audio), and while Mick would probably sort this out, the problem really is with the store and they should be given every opportunity to fix this up.

And yes, having matched B1's will make things just that bit easier when tracking, etc.

Please keep us informed.

What you've got is a nautical stereo pair. They're popular with guys like Jimmy Buffet, CSN, Loggins and Messina, Christopher Cross, etc. Make shure you set them up red to starbard, green to port. Just remember the phrase "red right recording".

As a guy in America, I am also the owner of PMI. As such, I own Studio Projects. My distributor in Australia is Front End, and as such, I can help you by getting Mick involved with your dealer. Just let me know if you need any assistance. I am only trying to help....:)

Alan,

I presumed (may be wrong), Hegs thought you were referring to (Warren Dent's) Front End Audio in the US and not Mick's FEA out here ;)

No problem...I assume he bought it there and not from Warren in the USA. If he did that, well then he has a problem, but I can get Mick to help... Hey, how the hell you been? I assume you have been busy, I know I sure have been. So much going on but all good...

Any new records or songs out there...Hows your sons band? Keep me posted.

........ Hey, how the hell you been? I assume you have been busy,......

Was fine until Tuesday evening when I spat myself sideways off a small stepladder (working/rebuilding in the studio, that's all explained here http://www.recordingproject.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=30325 ).....end result is I've severe bruising and strained most muscles from my right hip up through most of my rib cage.....can't walk, burp, fart, laugh, etc., without going through considerable spasm and pain.......and most frustratingly, doubt that I'll be doing any more work for a couple of weeks at least:mad:.

I know I sure have been. So much going on but all good...

So what's new :).

Any new records or songs out there...Hows your sons band? Keep me posted.

Probably too much to tell here but it is all generally positive, apart from the studio being out of action.

Take care,

ChrisO

Yeh sorry, I thought you were recommending me to an American dealer (which seemed kinda strange :P ) But yeh Iv heard of Front End Audio, they are in Canberra i believe? I might as well just say it - I ordered the mic from Allans music in sydney. Like i said tho, im not sure it was even their fault. Ill give them a call tomoro and see if they can help. If they wont, Ill get back to you Alan, and many thanks for your kind help - I cant believe Im talking to the owner of SP. I bow down in your presence, you make such awesome and affordable mics!!

The other complication is that my original B1 is the superceded version - i.e. without the noise pad thing. When I ordered from Allans they especially tracked me down a superseded model to match mine, but they said it was the last one existing from the Australian supplier! So my only other option for getting the right dot colour may be to get a new model with the noise pad - which I would suspect would have different electronics and thus defeat the whole purpose of trying to make my pair match. Your thoughts?

That's confusing to me. When I was a sailor, green=starboard and red=port.
