Studio Projects B3

Ok, I have a Presonus Firestation, a mackie 1604 VLZ, a couple of sure SM58's, and some generic drum mics. I would like to get a decent vocal mic. The B3 seems perfect! My question is though...can it also be used as a kick drum mic? Also...what paterns are good for what? Thanks!
 
i've used my B3 on kick once or twice. it wasn't horrible, but it didn't have the low punch that i've heard from large diaphragm dynamics. and it definitely needs a pop screen.

i do like it on vocals though, and acoustic guitar.

the different patterns determine the directionality of the microphone. if you want some isolation, cardiod is good. to pick up sound from every direction (maybe as a drum overhead or a room mic), use omni. figure 8 has more side cancellation, if that's where most of your errant noise is coming from. you can also use it in some stereo miking techniques.
 
on vocals, almost certainly. on the kick, possibly. it will definitely be different, and you may like it better.
 
You could drive a nail with a SM57, but a hammer would be better. Get a kick drum mic.

-Such as a FET 47. If that isn't in your budget, try the B3 on kick. It may take a few tries to place, but is quite suitable for the task.

that's quite a jump in price. there are a number of $200-ish kick mics that are very well thought of.

Or a AKG D112, Audio Technica ATM25, Sennheiser MD421, Shure Beta52, and etc -- if not, then maybe try a B3. I didn't say the B3 wouldn't work, it just wouldn't be my first kick mic choice. I have two Studio Projects B3 mic's and I really like them, but not on kick, or at least not yet.

I really like the Studio Projects B3, but I'm not going to push it as a great kick drum mic.

You mic makers sure like to use your product name and the Neumann name and etc in the same sentence a lot. lol. :)

Yeah, like the AKG D112, Audio Technica ATM25, Sennheiser MD421, Shure Beta52, and etc.
 
Do you need the multiple patterns of the B3? If not, then get a B1 and a separate kick drum mic.

that was going to be my next question...how usefull is the multi-patern?
 
I have one multi-pattern mic and I love it. I don't use the omni or fig-8 patterns that much, but they are great options for different sounds.

CAD E-100. Very fine kick mic. They don't make 'em new anymore, but easy enough to find.

I think the Studio Projects B3 is one of the "best bang for the buck" budget costing multi-patern LDC mic's on the market, and the multi-paterns are very usefull for MS miking and etc. The B3 also sounds a little different than the B1. If you can spring for the B3, I'd take it over the B1.
