Studio Projects B3 vs. C1

these 2 mics are at basically the same price ( i was checking out the prices on the website that Flames posted before) with only about 30 quid between them. i was reading a description of the mics....it seemed to imply that the C1 was more of "a do all general purpose recording mic " than the B3, yet the B3 has selectable patterns, which would make it more versitile no?? maybe not...i do need a versitile mic....for vocals and instruments (acoustic gtrs, guitar amps.....etc). so which one? B1 or C1?

also i've heard about the C1 being backordered...i'm guessing this is only in the states right? or have people been having trouble getting the C1 in the UK/Europe??

Yes... but their characteristics are substantially different.

I would suggest that the opposite is true. The C1 is a fixed cardioid only microphone. It is also more colored than the B3 with a fairly strong proximity effect and upper-mid presence boost. While these characteristics can make it sound very nice on certain types of sources, the same characteristics can also make it less than suitable for recordings where these traits are actually undesirable. The B3 being more neutral would make it somewhat more versatile IMHO.

Selectable patterns do indeed give greater versatility in your recording. Cardioid for less room effect and a rise in bass response up close, omni for use as overheads on drums, capturing more room sound or recording an ensemble at a distance without bass rolloff and figure-of-eight for "eye to eye" duets and in MS (mid-side) recording.

I think the B3 would do the trick if you want the flexibilty... which you appear to do. The C1 is very popular and definately can sound good but doesn't have quite the 'all-round' advantages of the B3.

Just my 2cents.... Others may choose to differ! ;)

ok, thanks alot for your time & advice pundit...i had a feeling that someone might say something along those lines. think i'll follow your advice and go with the B3.

I have both, and I completely agree with Pundit. Sounds like you need to order the B3 right now!;)

Seriously, today I received my package from Humbucker Jake, it contained a FMR RNC, a SP C1 and a B3.
I like it all! But yeah, the B3 is somewhat more transparent (I've only tested it a little so far on voice and ac. guitar)
 
PG- the hard answer is C-1 is probably better for vocals more often better than not, but there is no real better or worse. What's the "best" piece of a jigsaw puzzle? The one you're looking for right now. What's the "best" vocal mic? The one that fits the singer you have today on the song you're recording right now. Change songs, you may have a different answer. That's why vocal mic selection is such a time consuming and expensive pain in the ass. There isn't one right mic. In general, I think C-1/C-3 is more useful as a vocal mic and B-1/B-3 is more useful as an instrument mic, but 30% of the time, the reverse is true.-Richie

A picture's worth a thousand words, but an audio CD is even better. Go to the Studio Projects website and order the FREE CDs demo'ing the B and C series. I must warn you, though, you'll want to buy 'em all!;)

I'd be gracious if they could put up these tracks as mp3, because there's no way I can get a hold on this CD here in germany... :(

Don't forget the T3. I got mine yesterday, and all I can say is......butter....silk......warm.....smooth........this is a singer's mic!

Not to change the direction of this thread, but...
I am really interested in the T3 also, if you have the chance to post anything (solo?) track wise I'd love to hear it. I have been listening to a lot of the blind test sessions around the BBS and every time I hear one that I really like it seems to be a Tube mic like the NTK or Solid Tube. I love to compare.

I'll be taking a close look at all of the SP on the Frankfurt Show. However I haven't yet heard a tube mic that I really really dig (compared to other mics in shootouts and so on), so it seems I'm not really into that sound. But as I said, I'll take my time checking all of 'em out. :)
