Flatpicker, I don't know how many of the mics you mentioned you've used, but I think some of your descriptions and solutions are inaccurate. The C4 SDC's are not "accurate" and they're actually quite colored. More colored than the B series. They are, after all, "C Series" mics. All the C's are fairly colored.
Opps! I disobeyed my own rule and went talking about a product I haven’t heard – I KNOW better than to do this!

Anyway, thanks for the correction. (Dan, I NEED the SD mic CD!!!)
I assumed (I know – “ass” out of “u” and “me” but in this case, me!) that since they were SDCs they would automatically be more accurate than LDCs. I based this assumption on my test comparing the MXL 603s and
the Oktava MK-012 to a SP B3. Although the 603s and the MK-012 sounded different from each other, they were both more “accurate” than the B3 as far as tracking the guitar and reproducing it’s natural sound (I tried every position imaginable, too. Didn’t see my wife and kids for about 8 days, and boy, was I in trouble!

). The B3 does impart it’s own “color”, at least in my room on my instruments. Like I said earlier, it’s not much, but it’s there.
Another reason I probably assumed (there’s that word, again!) they were more of an accurate nature, was from talking to Brent Casey at Summer NAMM. We were discussing mic placement and he was telling me how well the C4s captured a violinist he had recently recorded at a classical concert, once they were in the correct position. Somehow I just got the impression they were more natural sounding than colored.
It’s good to know this – if they’re THAT colored, and since I don’t usually record drummers, I’m glad I didn’t sink $350 into a pair for acoustic guitar!
