Ahh humma humma humma
Hey all...

Sorry if this is too large... I just wanted to show it off..

(oh yeah... and PLEASE ignore the wire spaghetti behind the board and the dead plants :) - The plants are being rehabilitated and the wire is being redone with some Gepco cable)

Damn. Is that a control room or a meditation room??

Love it!

version2...

Its pretty nice... by night that is what it looks like... during the day it overlooks a school playground and my backyard... no busy streets etc... VERY relaxing.

My only real complaint is that it is a SMALL room... the camera is in the doorway.

Looks to be about the same size as my control room is going to be. Under construction right now...I am going to be posting pictures of the progress. Going to get some 'before' pictures tonight or tomorrow before I really get down to business.

In fact, I am not really sure about my design as of now. I was thinking of posting some of my designs and seeing what everyone had to say about them.

Mmm, me like. It's pictures like these that make it so easy to get the GF to approve building a studio instead of a living room.

Nice job! That looks very tidy indeed: there's much less rope-salad than you seemed to imply. That does look live a very livable space, and it does go to show that a recording space doesn't have to become a plce that the door has to stay closed on at all times.

version2...

Yeah.. not much "design thought" here... it was the room I could get from my wife without too much complaint. She let me pick out all the paint and such myself :) wow!

Ola...

I was going for the "intimate" kind of look... GF's/wives seem to appreciate that. Add lots of brass and keep the dark black objects to a minimum and they seem to approve :)

Only real pain in the butt is that it is on the second floor of my house... made hauling all that crap up there a REAL joy.

Velvet Elvis
(btw - there are still a huge pile of tools sitting right outside the studio door... wonder if I should clean those up) ;-)

Skippy...

Thanks... its a good thing the door doesn't have to stay closed... that's one of my favorite features of this room...

The door is a double french door... glass window panes and all, so you can see into the studio at all times. I left the door alone because its a big dark mahogany door and it just looks cool in the studio.

version2...

I do have a live area... its across the hallway upstairs. Its not a "modified" area, but it works for now. I will actually be building several rooms in the near future. I built the control first because its what I needed.

My band was signed to a record contract and we decided to take it upon ourselves to do the recording (I used to engineer/play in a few studios as a job)... so I setup a studio for about 6 months or so in an old victorian house that belongs to my parents... we did all the "live" tracking there. As it came time to do overdubs and vocals, I just needed to get a good control room up and running at my place, so I built the one pictured (not really built... more or less some scrubbing/painting/texturing and absorbtion treatments). But there is still a place that is REALLY dead for vocals and a couple of rooms for electric and acoustic guitar work.

John,

Wow.. that was fast. Thanks a bunch for putting it up on your site. I will see how quickly I can do some more pictures. I ought to have a chance this weekend (as long as I'm not stuck at the malls doing Christmas shopping).

Track Rat,

Thanks... I'm pretty happy with the turn out so far... now if only I can find a chance to use it!

Thanks

I like it. I like the green paint with the white trim. Very nice.

Gargamel...

Thanks... my wife is partial to green and I've always thought it was a sharp looking color when contrasted with white... the white is actually pretty grey in color, but since the green is dark as well, you don't really notice.

All the Auralex foam is bright white... ceiling and window treatments are white as well.

Then add a boat load of brass light fixtures and hardware for the windows and doors.

c9-2001...

Thanks for taking a look

I do need to still paint or stain the speaker stand... but I needed the stuff set up because I was jones'ing to use it again.

Velvet Jones...

Very nice setup.. my setup is getting there.
How do those Events work for you? I'm looking at some new active near fields.. (leaning towards mackie)

I couldn't help but notice you are in Cedar Rapids.
I live in The Quad Cities IL. What studios did you work in and what is your band?

Velvet Jones.... that's a good one....
"Basketball Jones... got a basketball jones"...

I love the 20/20's... never heard the Mackie's but all the mixes I've done on the 20/20's translate really well (which is all that really matters). I still use the NS-10's for that "what would it sound like if I had a piece of carpet on my head" sound ;-)

I should comment that my 20/20's are the passive ones (different order crossover than the actives if I remember right)... and they are being powered by a Carver Cube poweramp (you can see it in the photo under the left end of the board... next to the computer). GREAT power amp... no fans, so it is nice and quiet.

I used to engineer and session play for 21st Avenue Studios in Cedar Rapids... mostly commercials or independant bands. Also did some work for Rosewood, Catamount and Schoolhouse with various groups etc.

My band is called "just william" (see my web site link)

Actually... we have probably played more in your area than we have in Cedar Rapids.
