Hi there --

I would like to know if you guys can point me in the right direction towards active studio monitors under $1K that are well-suited for working on small ensemble classical music. I don't mind shopping used or looking at older models if I should look there for value. The ensemble in particular ranges from duets, trios, and quartets to about 25 musicians, occasionally with a soprano or tenor. The music is not bass-heavy, although there is one acoustic upright bass in the larger ensemble.

Many thanks to the people who share their expertise on this board.

I'd have a look/listen at the Genelec 8030B which should be available in your price range. Lovely, natural sound, especially on classical and orchestral music.

Or, if you'd be willing to go with a separate amp and second hand speakers, watch for anything in the BBC/Rogers list (LS3/5A, LS3/7 or LS3/9. They were designed specifically for classical monitoring. They often go for silly audiophool money but there are occasional bargains.
