Studio Monitors for a newbie...

Elove, I'd recommend just one thing--searching this site, using the search icon above. You'll find almost as many opinions as members here. Take notes. Trust no one, especially those with very narrow opinions. Listen with your own ears. Then buy. And then, probably most important of all, spend a ton of time getting to know the sound of your new monitors.

passives - build your own using parts from www.partsexpress.com - the Dayton monitor kit for ~$160 is a great value

powered/active - m-audio BX8s. tweakable. you won't need a sub. they sell for fairly cheap now (i see a used pair on ebay for $270 shipped).

a lot of people around here recommend the wharf 8.2As, but i've never heard them.
 
I have the Tannoy Active Reveals. Very happy with them, too. If you have an amp maybe the passive ones would be better. Apparently they sound better.
