How would these be? My budget is $100. I'm going more for sound than accuracy. Would I be better off getting surround sound speakers? This is for my DAT but it's also my sound system throughout my room which is about 20 feet by 24 feet. I'll be listening to music, mixing music, watching movies, etc... It's my computer but music is my main priority. Thanks.

I got the M-Audio Studiophile monitors today, just about a step up from the pro3[ these are 150 bucks, but a nice guy at guitar center gave them to me for 130]. They're pretty good.

Nothing wrong with M-Audio

I use a pair of BX8s, which are around $400US (the newer BX8as are more) but the brand gives good value.

Just remember, you get what you pay for, so if you're on a beer budget, buy the best beer you can find.

Hi Scrappersa,

If you want to do all that on the same set of speakers, I think a good hifi speaker would be a much better choice in your situation.

I don't know what those m-audio monitors sound like, they could be just perfect in this case, but studio monitors in general are targeting a much narrower audience. You might find them to be a bit boring to listen to movies and records.

I'm certainly not an expert in this area, and I do hope others will chime in and give you some good advice.

I do use Klipsch bookself speakers for mixing and listening with good results. I also had good luck with KEF and B&W hifi speakers in the past.

Whatever you decide to do, trust your ears and go from there.

Good luck,

aspirin

I use a set of BX5's and they are great. Some people get a sub woofer to use with them

Aspirin,

That is exactly why you should use sudio monitors. They are SUPPOSED to sound boring and bland. They are supposed to have the flattest response possible so you hear exactly what you have recorded WITHOUT the emphasis on high and low frequencies that Hi Fi home stereo speakers are made to give you. If you mix a song using home stereo speakes as monitors, it will sound like ass played back on someone's home stereo. Unless you have compensated for the characteristice of the speakers you use as monitors.

The bottom line is, you WANT your mixes to sound somewhat dull through studio monitors. You want to hear everything as clearly as possible, without over emphisizing anything. Home stereo speakers are just not made to do that.

Got a pair of BX8's and they are excellent, especially in that price range. Those 8" push plenty of low end, and like the pads on the back to adjust for your room. Great buy.

I decided to start with the DX4s. They seem good for me so far--both the price and the way they fit into my setup, as well as the sound!
