Hi all,

Im trying to set myself a little project studio and want some decent monitors to help with mixing. I have a modest budget of £250 and basically am totally perplexed by the talk of crossover frequencies etc. my room is rather small (probably 8'/10') so I know that bass build up might be a problem.

I have been offered a pair of Rogers LS3/5a's for FREE, but have read that they have a 'coloured' sound. I have also been advised to get a pair of active Tapco 5's (£250). What do y'all think?

Any help from you fine people is greatly appreciated
.

Chris :) :D

Get the FREE Rogers. Mix with them. What do the results sound like?

If you don't like them, you can sell them on eBay for more than the cost of the Tapcos.

:D Yo Mod-Squad:

For your budget, you can get a pair of KRKs with EIGHT INCH woofers. Many models come with only 5 or 6.5 inch woofers. I like the larger woofer.

Next, do you want active or passive? I use the passive model; less pounds/dollars. But, you will need some type of amp to power the speakers. I've been running my entire rig on a Sony integrated amp which also runs two tape decks, and another set of speakers.

This amp provides a "clear through" switch which eliminates any coloration; however, there isn't much coloration with the Sony amp.

You can also do the same with Yorkville monitors. Or, you can visit a vendor and pay more for other brands. Let your ears decide.

Good monitors are must have items. That being said, I'd still try the freebies and see if I could "learn" them. By that I mean play tons of commercial material through them and learn how they resolve those mixes. Where the bass sits on those monitors, the high end, etc. If you can learn how your monitors resolve sound, you can mix with them. Hell, folks mix on NS10's.

with toilet paper over the tweeters!

sometimes i think all this techno stuff is just a ploy to fry my brain further,
becasue just as I get into the db physics requirements for good boutique speakers technically perfect game....

here comes the NS10 side to the equation?
the Pro's mixing with NS10's comes up..... kinda like Behringer threads, they never die out or go away...

someone said "the NS10's sound so shtty, if you can get a good mix on those your mixes will translate anywhere!"

sizzle,sizzle,sizzle

thanx for the replys guys

thanx for the replys guys, go myself an amp today, gonna be playing through the Rogers to see what they're like!

Thanks for all the advise, do I really have to endure 'commercial' music????? ;)

Apparently the Rogers are BBC designed speakers as 'reference monitors' so I think if I do learn the way they sound - I'll be OK with them, i guess thats referencing is for anyway!

Thanx again guys

Cheers
Chris :) :) :)
