I bought the Audio Technica AT4033a and it sounds great in the store but is this mic intended on studio recording or can I use it for home vocal recording as well? Any suggestions on building a home vocal booth, maybe in the closet?

What reason could you possible imagine for not using any mic that's intended for studio use for homerecording, other than: it sounds bad?

The AT4033 is a good mic, from what I've read on this page, so why not? Maybe other mics will perform better with other vocals, but since you have this mic, why not use it? If you have more mics, find out which mic suits best for which application.

One thing you have to take into account is that this is a condensor mic (It is, right?) so it will need phantom power. Not applying phantom power will not damage the mic, but you won't get alot out of it...

The only thing that seperates home recording from studio recording is the budget that is invested. Most of the people that record in their bedroom would love to see pro-studio mics and pres before falling asleep...

m1chael,

Let me introduce you to the search button. It is a friendly little purple button in the upper right hand corner of this BBS. Click on it and type in keywords, like vocal and booth. I'd even go so far as using the Search Options and limiting your search to the Studio Building and Display forum.

This topic has been covered at least once or twice in there...
(The search illustrated above yeilds 59 threads!!!)

-ps, welcome to HomeRec, and remember The Search Button is your friend...

3-double hurray for the search-button!!!

HURRAAAAAYYY!!!
HURRAAAAAYYY!!!
HURRAAAAAYYY!!!

:D

Don't feel bad about it. We've been on this forum for way too long... Kinda like the old drunks that laugh with everyone in the pub. Just wait untill you meet the REAL old drunks(above 2000 posts...).

Roel,
This round's on me!! :)

m1chael,
What are you using the mic with? Yes you can use a "Studio Mic" in your home. The studio police aren't going to get you. :D If you have that thing working right, it will pick up every little noise in your room, though.

The studio police make me a bit paranoid. I am using the Omini Studio which has Phantom Power. The mic does pick-up everything, any suggestions on a booth?

If you search the BBS (see my first post on this thread) you'll find tons of suggestions. Everything from moving blankets draped over boom stands to plans for home-made vocal booths, to reviews of purchased pre-fab booths. It depends on your budget and room space.

the closet idea in your original post may be the way to go.....i had to move my vocals in the closet when I got my Marshall MXLv67.......i have the one end of the closet with heavy blankets all over the wall with the mic there......deaden it as much as possible.....use the clap test to see how dead it is........

BTW, that 4033 is a damn good mic....

Closet Vocal Booth

Thanks people -

- Im doing the closet thing, taking off the double doors and closing it off with one solid door with a small glass window. When I gut out my closet do I cover all walls with moving blanket or foam? And can I have a small electric fan running inside while im vocal recording?

I will also do a search......................Tx

Mike

Moving blanket or foam, either will do, depending on your budget and or your asthetic needs.

As far as the fan goes, if it is REALLY quiet, maybe. Be careful not to point it anywhere near the capsule of your mic. A blast of wind can damage your capsule.
