I'd like to get into recording eventually down the road but for now i have lots of tracks, just need a suitable place to mix, trying to rent a house, but still I'll most likely have neighbors. I'm not worried about treating a room just for recording I just need to soundproof or soundproof as best I can. Has anyone else been in my situation starting out, or do you all own homes or live in your parents basement? I read somewhere where a guy built a seperate room inside of a room and soundproofed that one and it worked well.

I'm just looking for some ideas and this is getting increasingly frustrating, if I could find a box to live in and was heated and powered, and suitable for mixing i'd get rid of all my belongs and move right in...I just wanna make music.

Check out the Studio Building/Display forum at the bottom of the main page, there's some people there who can help you :)

To actually a soundproof a room is pretty expensive and unless your landlord is willing to let you do construction it's next to impossible. Even if they let you do it do you really want to spend a few grand on construction on a rental?

When you look for a house try to find a room with few windows. Fewer side windows pointing towards the neighbors the better. High brick walls on the outside are good. A high level of ambient noise is good as long as it doesn't interfere with your recordings. The dim roar of a nearby freeway will help mask a lot of the noise from your house but sirens and harleys are bad. A quiet suburban neighborhood will be almost impossible.

Your best bet will be a lower end neighborhood where the neighbors are less finicky. Just make sure you have a dog or good security.

I got lucky and found a house that met all the above requirements and I can record guitars and drums at 2 AM on a weeknight with no complaints.

ahah! thanks, didn't realize there were more forums, i'll take a look through there.

Roadkill is on the mark for soundproofing.

If you're looking for a place to make noise that won't elicit visits from Johnny Law, get a place with a suitable below-grade basement. You'll have water incursion issues and humidity problems, but you won't get much hassle from neighbors. Inside the house, the sound will be a hellish din from which family members can gain no escape, but otherwise, you're cool.

Thanks for the advice, although i'll admit i'm so far away from building a studio it's not even funny. I need to start out small...maybe do some slight acoustic treatment...once I find the right place where I could pull of something like that. I'll come back here for sure once I find a house and post up pics of each room to see which is best.
