I am looking for a desk that is made for recording perposes (not just a computer desk) but I am not looking to spends thousands! Do you guys know of any places/manf. that have some decent stuff. I would like to be able to have my studio monitors where they need as well as my (2) 15"lcds. I do not have a mixer so desk surface space isnt all that critical but I would like to have some sort of keyboard/mouse tray. Some rack mounts would be nice also but I won't rule out having to get some separate rack table wings if need be. Thanks

Omnirax has the cheapest stuff but that isn't saying much. If you have the tools you can make a nice desk out of Melamine for a few hundred bucks or less.

It's not visually in the same league as the Omnirax/Argosy stuff........

Actually, I design furniture for a living for a well known US furniture company, so be carefull what you claim.

If you somehow think Omnirax is worth the extra money they charge for it, you have really been suckered. Their methods of construction and assembly are lacking to say the least. If you look closely at their funiture at stores like GC, you'll notice they really skimp on materials and engineering. I've seen their funiture bowing to the load of a 17" CRT and a couple of powered monitors. They use exposed fasteners that can cause damage to your equipment on the Presto unit as well.

There's about $100 worth of material in a $1400 Omnirax desk. You're basically paying for the overpayed US workers who put it together and the fact that the company is a low volume manufacturer and cannot compete at lower pricepoints like you would find with the Studio RTA and Ikea products.

If you like wasting your money, by all means go ahead and buy the hype Omnirax sells you.

Office furniture.
Corner unit and 2 side tables for under $600.

Corner Unit $199.00

Matching Table $179.00

I cut the "panel legs" down on the side tables so the keyboards would be at the standard height.

Then I built the equipment rack out of polpar, set the rails, and painted it satin black.

Office Depot.
Here's a link:

Search by brand. Look for Bush.
Get your keyboard tray there too.
Screw it in from underneath.

That's why everyone is recomending that he build it himself.

I built this bohemoth for a couple hundred bucks. I still need to finish up some of the trim and put in a sound iso rack underneath. There's a rack on the right side but the Radar is filling it up. When I move that underneath I can clear the stuff off of the top.

I do think the studio furntiture is overpriced - BUT - materials/construction aside, they manage to make it look visually appealing, something I have not generally found to be true with the budget stuff....... With the budget stuff you get cheap materials/construction AND no visual appeal on top of it.

My point against overpriced furniture was fairly clear right from the beginning.... it's basically a choice between being overcharged but having something that looks good, or going budget and have something less visually appealing.... you should read my posts more thoroughly - you badly misread my meaning.

I did understand what you are saying, but aesthetics aside, you erroneously associate lower price with cheap materials/construction. All the purchased furniture pieces in this thread including the Bush ones Michael Jones talks about are made from laminated particle board, therefore you cannot say there is much difference as far as materials go.

In fact its the opposite, Ominrax uses regular wood screws as fasteners where Bush and Studio RTA use concealed K-D fasteners.

Hello..........Ground control to Major Tom..............look again at my posts -- WHERE DID I SAY THAT?????

I never said the Omnirax/Argosy wasn't made out of budget materials....... I implied that it was, and it was overpriced, but that at least it had visual appeal....

back to Reading & Comprehension 101.........

Your words:

With the budget stuff you get cheap materials/construction AND no visual appeal on top of it.

The reason products from vendors like Studio RTA, Ikea and Bush are so much cheaper has nothing to do with quality of construction/materials, but rather economies of scale. They run 1000's of pieces at a time and therefore can get lower pricing on raw materials and save money on processing/manufacturing.

Yes, there is cheap, crappy RTA furinture out there, but I am trying to clear the misconception about RTA furniture as a whole being cheaply put together and of inferior quality materials.

Thanks for the Replies guy's! I will look into designing and constructiing something my self. Thanks again! I didnt mean to start a war! hehe

Who cares about RTA???????

Did I mention them even once????

All I said was that the product you posted about wasn't as pretty as the Omnirax/Argosy stuff......

I'm talking visual aesthetics and you're going on and on and on about materials/construction...........

Gimme a fuckin break...........

Whatever dude. I guess I can't have a civilized discussion with you - are you this damn rude to everyone that tries to get their point accross?

RTA means Ready To Assemble i.e. flat packed furniture - I was referring to the type of furniture rather than a brand.

Dammit........

...communication breakdown and misinterpretation on both our parts, it seems -- I thought you were pushing a "brand" and I wasn't seeing your point....!

Apologies, Brzilian!

Ok, ok. :)

No hard feelings then...:D

If you or anybody has ideas of what they like to see in "cheaper" RTA studio furniture, please let me know.

I have been pushing for the company I work for to get into this market for some time now. I see lots of opportunities for good product that is cheaper than the stuff from Omnirax or Raxxess and want to make sure I come up with stuff that works for us "Home" studio musicians.

Make a console that can hold a 24ch mixer, rackmount and top shelf for video and monitors for under $500. $300 would be insane but probably unrealistic.

The cheapest Omnirax desk that can do all that is around $1100. The design is really simple and it probably uses less then $125 in wood and hardware. That's what prompted me to build my own.
