Studio Etiquette - DOs/DONTs

1) Never fart in the control room.(Do it in the machine room, then get the assistant to "change reels".)

2) When visiting a session you are not working on say only 2 things "sounds great' & "anybody want a beer?"

3) never say: "Is this a demo?" or "is that through the small speakers?' stick with the two phrases mentioned above in point 2.

4) Avoid talking louder above the music if the volume gets turned up.

5) Avoid epic 'I'm so tired' yawning fits that last all evening, hardly encouraging to the hard working team doing 12-16 hours straight.

6) If you go outside to 'the real world' bring back a treat for each of the the crew, a drunken nymphomaniac model on a Quaalude, that sort of thing..

7) If you insist on having a picture taken, dont get off the couch where you have been all day and pose for it standing behind the engineer, pointing at the desk in a 'here, fix that there' type of 'I'm in charge' photo.

8) Unless you want a crossbow bolt through your head, get celophane wrapped snacks out of their wrappers - quickly!

9) Keep quiet while there is control room / live area comunication going-on on the "talkback"

May I add:

Take the smoke outside & keep that damn drink the hell away from my equipment.
 
Never say "that sounds warm and punchy"...unless you want a "warm punch" in the jaw :D
 
Never trust the little black box sitting next to the console that the engineer tweaks towards the end of the day! Check to make sure it has wires going to it....:)

oh just thought of this one..

Never use a Mackie for anything..(well if you need a doorstop, then *maybe*)

Here is one.....

If you expect to get done on budget, don't tech talk with the engineer! We love to bill clients to "talk" about recording.....:)

Ahhhhhhhhh, I KNEW so ametth. You are too much of a gear snob now to have been kidding....:)

Here is a good one.....

"Dude, could you turn it up for me?" = "Dude, could you blast your ears out at the console so that my mix will sound like shit in another hour?".

I like that one...

since were talking studio fun here, I thoght I would add this: On my console, there are switches that just switch, they dont do anything, just move up and down. We had a guy in, a "producer" that was complaining about the bass in the mix..said it wasn't "exciting" enough..so I told him we have bass exciters built into the console, just flip that "switch"...worked like a charm, the bass was now exciting!! :eek:
 
that is on the same line as my black box joke above....:)

when the guitar player wants that extra "whatever" on a track that sounds great, you turn the knob on the black box and ask him how it sounds then? You can of course do a useless patch on the patchbay too to make it more realistic....gets them every time!

Gidge, a tube mic stand has been found to be insufficient now!!! Can you believe it?

You need a Tube Pop Screen in front of the mic to get the full benefits of a Tube Mic Stand!

Just thought you might want to know....

I can't wait for the new tube guitar picks to come out. So many guitar players could use a warmer tone, and I think the pick is that place to start!

Here is another Don't.....

If you don't want to hear all sorts of funny stuff on your mix the next day, DON'T get the engineer high!

I can't believe how many musicians still rest drinks on top of guitar amps, I saw another bass amp go up in smoke just last week from a spilled beer, I've lost count of how many that makes.

vox, a good drunk never sets his beer down!

You should try drinking with more experienced drinkers! :) I have never seen a beer spilled on an amp with the crowd I hang with. The cup seldom leaves their lips! :)

This is close to mikeh's post about smoking... I can't stand it when a musician, goes outside for a smoke and comes back smelling to high heaven of the shit. and then starts talking inches away from your face ..So i keep a little spray thing of breath freshener, in the control room... Still doesn't clear up the clothes smell... I been tempted to start keeping some old spice in the studio also, but thats a bit drastic...
 
I swear this is true !

I had a guy that insisted I play him the mix over the phone and then went on to ask me....."what happend to the Bass ?" ( I have witnesses)
