As daft a question as this may be, what exactly is a studio diary and just out of interest, what do you do with it when you have one ? I mean, I have an idea of the former but it could be one of two different things. I'm curious {some would say, nosey !}.

Usually they're pointless video's of bands fannying around that're sometimes funny but not informative. I'm looking for stuff thats interesting to read or watch about technical process's used.

I can see how that would be very interesting. I for one can sit all day long and read about the who, how, what and where ...when it comes to the tech side of any thing that has to do with recording or live sound. Can't get enough of it.

The infamous recording diary that I remember from awhile back (and I guess still ongoing) is the Mixerman diary (I guess there's also a book now):

it's been speculated that much of that was fabricated. supposedly a great read but might not help with the technical aspect of recording. can't say 'cause i didn't read it.

Isn't that what a diary is about...stretching the truth and reliving it as a fantasy?
I think the OP is looking for actual session notes/sheets...and I'm not sure how many people use/keep those in the home rec world.
I write down my settings for each item when I'm tracking...what was used, mic & position, preamp settings, guitar amp settings, drawbar settings...etc...etc...but then I don't get into it much deeper than that, like writing down my "thoughts". I also write down my final mixdown settings, and still take photo snapshots of the console when I'm done.
I've yet to recall a mixdown setup for any reason....but I do use check my tracking notes as sometimes I want to get a particular sound I've used before, so the tracking notes help a lot...especially if I'm wondering about something months and months later....

Heck no. I kept a diary from '77 right through to '91 and believe me, there was no fantasy there ! Indeed, I got into trouble for 'diaries' I kept in workplaces.
I tend to keep a book of what gets done and on which dates and which tracks get used up and when something was backed up etc. I never write down any settings though. There may be some things I return to but I try to start everything from a fresh page. When I first started recording, I didn't but since '95 I have found it to be indispensible. Recording life is too complicated otherwise. As to my thoughts, they remain locked away in the vault of my mind as I don't want to be sued by the rich and powerful.....

I guess I was thinking about high-school girls....I have to stop doing that!
Samuel Pepys, Tony Benn, Alan Clarke, Sir Alex Ferguson, Charles Darwin, Daniel Defoe, Captain Cook, Tenessee Williams, Kenneth Kaunda, Lewis Carroll, Harry Truman, Alistair Campbell......there are some really famous diaries by political/sporting figures down the years, mostly blokes. Some of them read like high school girlies though - or are at least comparable, if any of the sneak peeks of my youth are anything to go by....

Geoff Emerick's book, My Life Recording the Beatles, is partly a studio diary. Doesn't get very technical though.

I play some some crossharp, even studied under Joe Filisko at the Old Town School, but I don't really do much that I want to stick to disc. I was always much more interested in playing the studio behind the glass as my instrument.
