Another brick in the wall
Here's 2 songs from my good buddy's 4 song demo that I recorded last night. All comments welcome. I had a good time with my new Rode NT5's on drum overheads, they're a huge improvement over what I had before. The 2 songs are Gridlock and Nightlight. I'm quite pleased with how the recordings turned out, I think I'm coming along pretty well with my recording and mixing skills. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1627&alid=-1

"Nightlight"

Holy jam Batman!

Sounds killer!

Nice vocal work!

I have nothing to offer from my headphones.

Awesome!

Watch them bass freqs- they're pilin' up on ya' a bit.;)

The Rodes sound good. Bring 'em up some though. You need a bit more crash cymbals, and the snare is a bit weak & tubby.

Nice arrangements!:)

Cool, glad you guys dug the tunes. You're totally right about bringing up the cymbals too, the second I read that I couldn't believe I had them so low in the mix to begin with.

Sweet!

Listening to Gridlock. Excellent...love the vocals!

These are just some opinions subject to change...

Overall, sounds to me like it could use a little boost @ 15-20k. Maybe.

Before I did that, I think I'd compress and raise the vocals just a touch more. And then see where the high end stands. There's something about the snare that's distracting too, maybe a cut around 500Hz?

Performances are awesome, and i don't say that lightly. There's a few intonation problems in the vocal toward the end, but i can look past that right to the delivery. Nice job there!

I don't know what it is about the snare. Maybe someone else does.

Awesome song and very very good mix!

Listened to "gridlock", i like the drum chops. Really nice arrangements in this...vocals kick ass. Nice one!

I listened to this the other night and came back again. The clarity of the overheads is really sweet and pick up everything, jus need more volume. The back trax were really good, just started gettin a little frequency cloudy. Nice playing and arrangement too.

since its not your band, I want to comment on the mix.

I really like it. What I like is that the voice is not sharp and sibilant like so many others. It meant I could turn it up loud and still enjoy it.

I checked out Gridlock.

Great classic rock piece! I really liked the Deep Purple mood it emulated in the organ and vocals. Very well done.

I think the key problem areas lye in the bass guitar sounding too thick in the the mid bass frequencies that are shared with the organ and distorted rhythm guitar. It's a classic issue of too many instruments fighting for the same space in the spectrum and I am not sure as to what to suggest other then to put the guitar and octave up to free up the traffic jam and cut a db or two off the bass guitar around the 250hz area.

The snare sounds well recorded but I think it is the snare itself that is not a good sounding acoustic instrument and perhaps replacing it or tuning it up higher might add some snap to it. As it sounds now, it's sounds kinna thud like.

As was mentioned elsewhere, there overall high frequency content is on the low side and some sparkle could be added to it in the cymbals buy bring them up a bit in the mix and maybe adding a clear guitar up high on the fret-board to brighten things up.

Otherwise, this is a very well performed song and much talent is exhibited in the playing and recording of this piece!

Good stuff, dude!

Cheers! :)
