Stuck here in Edinburg, Am I going insane?

Here is a new NOT METAL song I wrote. Trying to get my mix down, but I'm new to these monitors (HS50M) and it's hard figuring out how things should go. I don't think I'm getting enough bass from them and I'll try moving them closer to the wall or something LOL. I think it's pretty good demo quality lol. Help me figure out where I should be aiming :D

Hey - the bass level is fine here. This was not what I expected as your stuff is usually all about metal riffs and anuses and stuff, right?

This is certainly more of an accessible sort of number here. "Edinburg" isn't the most musical sounding town name to work with, but you pulled that off. I thought some of the phrasing of the vocals seemed a little off or rushed or something, like the "For all the brain cells..." line. Just didn't seem to get all those syllables in there.

I thought the strumming guitar was a little loud relative to the drums especially. I'd recommend bringing them down or the drums up, or both. My favorite part was the jamming that began around 3:15...it kind of jumped back to a different era stylistically there for a bit, which was cool.
 
I checked it out on a laptop...obviously not a lot of bass extension but from what I heard that was ok. I agree with heatmiser that the guitar seemed a bit loud vs drums. Timing seemed a little loose in places. I confess this is more my style than death metal.
 
Yeah I don't just do Death Metal lol. I like to mess around with different stuff. Classic rock, blues etc.

The problem was that it was way too bass heavy, because I'm not getting enough bottom end with the Yamaha HS50M and no sub-woofer, but everything else seemed very nice and balanced. I had updated the song yesterday after doing a little research and I'll tell you guys how I solved the problem just in case anyone else has the same issue. I just put on some cheap standard head phones and mildly adjusted the bass based off what I was hearing and that pretty much fixed the issue. The rest is just stuff I need to fix when I have time.

I got a few new items on my gear list this year. New guitar, new monitors and a new mic (shure SM7b). So, I have a lot of experimenting and learning to do. And I appreciate the input because it gives me an idea of what I need to work on. I also want to ad that I've never had vocals sit so well in a mix than when the SM7b. It's like it naturally smooths out the esss and plosives on it's own with no major editing. The rest is performance I guess, unless I'm missing something here. I guess for a new unrehearsed song that I just threw together for the hell of it, not too bad?

not like your stuff at all....liked the bass, and the vocals are good too....not so sure about the rhythm guitar though when the solo comes in it works...timings a little off at parts, when the second verse comes in it sounds off


good tune though and definitely something to work on mate

You can sing...! Vocals are a bit low in the mix or the rythm gits are too loud. Timing is bit off sometimes. Weak point for me are the drums, you could programme them a bit better, maybe keeping them a bit more simple without too many fills. And maybe better samples...? Still a very good tune though.

I've been looking for real drummers to work with for many many years, but can't ever seem to find any that don't flake out eventually. They always seem to end up in prison or pawn their snares for a cold 6 pack of tall cans. I'm thankful for the drum programs I have because it does what it's told. It sounds real enough to me and everyone else I know who don't know these types of drum programs even exist. Do you have any suggestions?

I think there's some really low frequency build up mash up going on. Mostly in the kick. Othwerwise sounds pretty good.

Hey didn't we collab on a punkish song a long time ago?
 
Yup, we sure did. And it came out pretty good. A few of my real life friends who hate the DM stuff always tell me to do more songs like that lol...

Wow! I barely remember that. That breakdown section is insane. Man, how long ago was that? Could my snare be tuned any tighter? Lol. I can tell it's me, but I don't remember tracking this at all. I like the way I drummed it though- a lot. This is really weird hearing myself on something that has totally left my memory banks. It sounds like it could be Marky Ramone playing those drums. Man, I'm good. :D

You should redo the vocals. This is a pretty cool song.
 
I'll get around to re-doing to vocals, but I have so many thing/projects I want to do I don't even know where to start lol.

Agree with Joey here. I like the song. I think if the rhythm guitars came down a little bit, then the vox wouldn't sound as buried and we'd hear a little more reverb/room on the guitars. It would make it sound a little more moody and distant which would serve the song well imo. Cool song.

As far as the drum programming goes, are you just dropping in samples or doing midi? If you're doing midi, are you doing it to a click track? That could help the timing quite a bit.
 
Sounds pretty good dude - The guitars sound a little too loud on my monitors - a little harsh - but I think you just need to drop the volume a little so they don't overtake the song. I like the breakdown
