I'm having a hard time finding information on how to strip down and modify my Win OS (currently XP) to work faster and more stable. I know there's a lot of stuff in XP (or any Windows OS for that frickin' matter) that gets started on start up and keeps on running in the background - killing system resources. So, is there anyone who could give a guide to improving Win OS (preferably XP) to work more smoothly for DAW?

MANY thanks ...

Here's a list of Windows 2000 services and what they do. Windows XP shouldn't be much different. You also may want to revert to the Windows 2000 style UI. Turn off all visual effects. Check your task manager to see if you've got some stuff running that doesn't need to be. I belive there's also an XP version of Tweak UI out there. A Google search should turn it up.

Oh yea, I forgot about this one I spotted last week. Fairly decent article.

In case it wasn't clear, I provided that list of services so you can determine which ones you can disable.

thanks everyone for the help .... and I hope there are still some more tricks/tweaks coming this way :-)

A friend of mine recommended this website: http://www.bluelifeaudio.com/~pcconfig/

It helped me, so I hope it helps somebody else here, too.

Keep it coming ...

Msconfig is not something that comes with XP, or at least it's not in the Pro version.

msconfig does come in XP... it was taken out in 2000 but put back in in XP... both Pro and Home.
