Any one know how to get a good soud as far as strings go i want to produce a good orcestra sound for a rock ballad i tried Midi sounds but to me they dont sound right theres still somthing missing any ideas

MIDI or sample based stuff is getting a lot better, but there is still a big reason why projects that can afford it use a real orchestra. I have done a fair amount of orchestral recording myself and its just amazing how beautiful a real orchestra can sound. I was just sitting in on a orchestra session at Capitol yesterday a man is it a rush to hear 70 musicians playing together.

But since this is a "home recording" board and most people may never have a chance to record a real orchestra, here is a great tip:

Get the fake orchestra sounding as good as possible and then try and find some string players. They do not have to be fancy expensive studio musicians, just decent players from a local college of even high school. See if you can put together as many musicians a possible, even if its just one. but 3 or 4 would be great and get them to play over the top of of your fake orchestra. Record the group together micing the group and not the individual instruments. Record this a few times and them mix these new tracks into the the MIDI track. Its really amazing how much this will liven up the track and give it a sense of depth and "realness"

Its really nice to records string in a nice big reverberant space, but your average living room should do the trick.

Be warned that you will need to write out (or print out) parts for the string players. Many classical musicians can not improvise and need to have the music written out in standard notation.
