String VST's within Cubase or outside it?

Hi everyone,
I'm using Cubase on a Mac (just LE, but at the moment my limitations are greater than its :)
I'm looking to get some decent strings for what are mostly pop/jazz songs and was wondering what everyone was using. None of the bundled instruments or the ones I've found floating around on the net are any good at all.

My question: Are there any good VST instruments that I can use within Cubase (Mac)?
Or, will I need one of the stand alone programs that seem to pop up in searches, like Garritan Personal Orchestra? If so, is going backwards and forwards into Cubase relatively simple with these?

The same question applies for Brass and Woodwind, if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Garritan Personal Orchestra

This works as a VST - which means you can use it from within Cubase

+1 for GPO. Excellent program, that can work as a stand alone, or as a VST within a sequencer like Cubase. It has everything you need, and than some.

Halion, no vote for Halion? :-)

(okay, I know, bad VSTi humor)

Many thanks everyone for your replies. It's nice when there's an unequivocal answer which states that "you should get this" and then agreement. It's nice to know that GPO does work within Cubase too, as I found the marketing a bit ambiguous in this respect.

It looks like I'm going to have to put GPO on my 'to get' list. Anyone want to sell it to me at a price which an Aussie with a fairly crappy exchange rate can afford? ;)

Cheers,
Caro

Hi, I noticed your post title. String VST's what exactly? ;)

Seriously though, in answer to your question, if I'm doing strings I use the orchestra card on my Roland, coupled with the odd string sample.

There are plenty of string library VSTis out there, and they're all much of a muchness soundwise (I've listened to a lot of their demo MP3s). Although I can't comment on their usability.

I've yet to find the holy grail of string sampling/sythesis - at the end of the day you can always spot that it wasn't recorded by a real orchestra. :(

East west silver edition isn't bad, runs as a vst using kontact, personally prefer the singles as opposed to the multis''s, more realisic. Also i'm told atmsophere has some pretty sweet strings.

there's also synful which is modelled rather than sampled. i've got an early version and it has some good some sounds.

East west is the best i've heard to date.
