I have a problem with my nuts. The high E string keeps ripping the nib of the nut off (breaking the plastic). The guitar is a BC rich warlock but it's not the original neck. It was bought as is. The solution as far as I could tell was to put a string tree on the head to reduce the angle and stress on the strings and nut (string breakage is frequent as well at the nut). The question I have is as follows; Is there a correct way in placement of the string tree i.e. exactly halfway between the nut and tuner?

Get that problem with your nuts looked at before you even consider fixing your guitar

nut's(?)

HA! actually ive had this problem with string trees on more than one guitar...

Usually it is a stiff G String that causes problems for my nuts... :p Sorry. Half way would be fine. Not real important as long as it helps the problem. You might also try a Bone nut or graphite. Something with bit more strength. You can actually get one made of brass as well.

Brass nuts rule! They never ware out and they really add to sustain. But, your guitar tech will want 2 or 3 times as much to install one because cutting it is a beeech. If you've using plastic, try a bone nut.

I don't think that string trees is the way to solve your problem. They are designed to pull the strings down into the nut, not to the side. Look at Fender guitars, all the strings are parallel from the nut to the tuning pegs.
