i as just listening to this on a very good stereo system and i am amazed at the mix ESPECIALLY the drums. this song is an example of near PERFECT song writing and aranging.

my question is: Does anyone know the mic setup on the drums of this track (or any other Beatles songs? is this only one overhead? i know EQing the drums probably has a lot to do with the sound but im very curious of how the drums were miked.

Strawberry Fields is actually a hybrid of two different takes of the song. One take was done at a faster tempo and a different key than the other. I saw George Martin talking about it in "The Making of Sgt. Pepper" which is a fascinating documentary. It was this song that was the catalyst for the Sgt. Pepper album and the way they were going to approach its production.

Yeah, they sped up one version and slowed down the other untill they matched the pitch. The splice is about 1 minute in right after "Let Me Take You Down Cause I'm Going To". You'll hear the music get more aggressive.

Also by that time they were tight miking the drums. Still a single mono overhead and I believe it was a dynamic AKG of some kind.

so it was one LDC overhead and a snare mic, kick...etc?

I saw the documentary on PBS, and I think I even taped it. Check the PBS website.
