Does anyone know of a company that sells strap locks that you don't have to modify your guitar to use?

I use Schaller Strap Locks which usually have enough space to use the existing screws for your guitar. They fit my PRS & Ernie Ball Petrucci.

The newer ones use the larger strap button but the older ones had smaller holes.

Don't you have to remove the orignal button on the guitar and replace it with the new in order to use them. I am just scaried I will mess the part up

Basically, you are going to have to remove the original buttons. Those buttons were not designed to have anything lock onto them. Strap-lock systems aren't just clips that lock onto the existing buttons.

It's not really that bad replacing the buttons. Just do it slowly, take your time, don't make any hasty decisions or moves, and don't force anything to fit or work. Follow those rules and you'll be just fine. I've done it on 3 of my guitars so far without a single problem, and I'm not the type inclined to do this sort of thing.

You just unscrew it and screw the new one in the same hole. You will do a fine job. Go for it.

What if the whole on the orginal execpts a diffrent size button the the new one I want to put in it? I am also very scaried I will strip it or it will not fit as snug as the orignal.

No worries man, you should be able to tell pretty quickly if it's going to fit or not. It's just a screw.. You'll be okay.. I promise. :)

So there is no way to tell for sure you are buying the right strap locks for the right guitar?

Do this and you should be fine. Take the original button off. Screw the new straplock button back in, but do not use the screw that came with it...use the original screw. Tighten it down until it is firm, but don't crank it hard.

Straplocks are straplocks man, just stop worrying about it and install them! If you go slow and don't rush it, you won't screw up your guitar. Seriously...stop worrying about it...it's not a major thing at all

When I got my LP I was scared to death to unscrew the button. he he. I finally mustered up the strength and bam... My guitar fell apart in my hands.

ok really, If they don't fit then just take them back brotha~

Ahhh orginal screw wow duh that makes me feel better. Now I just have to find a lock that sits well on an LTD viper 400. Anyone have any suggestions?

The above mentione Schallers are the best IMO, and they come in different finishes, black, gold, and chrome.
If by some stroke of bad luck you strip the hole, take a flat toothpick, put a little wood glue on it, and stick it in the hole. Then screw away. Problem solved. :)

Schaller straplocks:

The link is just so you can see them. They should be available in most music stores.

I've been using those on my LTD EC-1000 for over a year. They work perfectly with the original screws. They're very solid and they fit well against the guitar.

One suggestion... When you take your existing strap buttons off, you will notice a small felt ring (kinda like a washer) that was between the button and the body of the guitar. Make sure and use that with the new straplock button. Otherwise the button will scrape up the finish on that small part of the guitar, and it might come loose.

If you don't wanna install anything, or don't feel like buying multiple straps/strap locks for multiple guitars, I highly recommend the planet wave straps with built-in locks; no work required, stay on extremely well, and are easy to transfer from guitar to guitar.

Sam Ash carries them, along with everybody else.

If you're comfertable with taking off the strap buttons (it really isn't a big deal, and you really should learn how to work with them, since if you own a guitar long enough eventually you'll probably have to figit with the strap screws when they start coming out), you can really just buy a couple of washers for 25 cents and install them and they'll hold your strap just fine. Only downside is it's a bit trickier to take off the strap (but they hold better, IMO, and if you're permanently leaving a strap on there anyway, there's no reason not to use 'em).

I personally like the Schaller strap locks the best, but the screw is slightly larger than a standard strap button screw, so you can't go back easily. If you don't want to modify your guitar at all, you want THESE.

I don't trust the Dunlop ones, personally. No real reason, I just don't.

i was going to suggest those same ones light suggested

and also.........put a little bit of wood glue on the screw right from the beginning. because the strap sits further away from the guitar than with normal strap buttons, there's more tension on the screw and it WILL eventually strip and you'll have to do the toothpick trick.

just glue it before it slowly pulls itself out and you wont have any problems.

the problem with most strap locks is that they stick out further than a normal strap button would.

this became especially evident when i got my first Parker Fly and my strap lock was jabbing me in the pelvis.

so i found these...

http://www.jimdunlop.com/products/accessories/straplocks/index.html

scroll down till you see the red plastic thing. they come in black as well. i have an older round version thats black. they never come off, they never poke me, they dont break, and they dont require any changes to my guitar.

i think they actually hold better than a regular strap lock does. i had some older shaller locks i believe, they held to the strap pin really well, but i had instances where the hardware attached to the strap would come loose and the strap itself would slip off the entire assembly.

with these dunlop things, theres no way that can happen.

AAAAAND... theyre cheap :)

Why do people dig up and post on ancient threads that have already had the question answered?

and they give the same answers that have already been given.......apparently they don't have the attention span to read the whole thread.
