Stopped Recording

Firstly, I'm a novice to all things sound-cardy, and recording-ing-ly.
Now that that's out of the way:
I seem to have done something. I'm using Adobe Audition, and I was mucking around with trying to get it to stop stuttering. I was getting gaps in the recording. Following a tech guide on the Adobe site, I decided to play with the buffer size. I do not have an ASIO device, just a plain ol' sound card.

I changed the buffer size by a 1000 samples (from 2048 to 3048). This, seemingly, caused my recording to... no longer record. I changed it back, but nothing changed. I still cannot record. Maybe this wasn't what I did at all, and it's just a red herring, but it was the last thing I did.
Interestingly: I opened Audacity, to try a recording in there. No such luck! The cursor stutters on 0:00:00! So it seems to me I've done something above and beyond Adobe Audition.

Does anybody know what I did?
You're help is appreciated in advance. Thanks!

to clarify, when recording, get the buffer size as low as you can. Change the buffer size to as high as you can during playback.

Even if your soundcard doesnt provide asio drivers, there are other drivers you can download online that are pretty universal for asio. I've never tried it personally but check out asio4all

ayo, Pitseleh.....

i cant pull up that site from this computer, but you sayin there are drivers or things you can download there to manipulate ya PC to have ASIO drivers????
