Bob Ezrin is a "PRODUCER".

Mutt Lange is a "PRODUCER".

Bob Rock is a "PRODUCER".

I can go on with a list longer than this page will fit. These people are "PRODUCERS".

They know EVERYTHING about sound engineering, arranging, instrumentation, micing techniques, monitoring, etc... They know when to put something in and when to take it out (get your mind out of the gutter). They know how to coax the best performance out of a performer. They know about frequencies, polarity, phase inversion, dynamics, and more about sound than most of us ever will.

They`ve paid their dues by spending an eternity in studios learning their craft.

Loading pre-recorded "beats" into your pirated DAW in your Mama`s basement does NOT make you a "PRODUCER". Find a different title. "PRODUCER" is already taken. I understand that the word "PRODUCER" has probably got you laid more than once, but you`re not a "PRODUCER".

I have no problem with what you do. It`s an art-form in itself. But, please, stop calling yourself a "PRODUCER". It`s an insult to those who have earned that title by learning and perfecting their craft. They`ve already forgotten more than you`ll ever know.

I`ve known "PRODUCERS". Most of them were "PRODUCING" long before I was born.

Senator, you`re no "PRODUCER".

:D

Hmmm. Can I be a "wannabe" ? Or how about  "A jack of all trades, master of none, wannabe producer ?. Nah I like "Musical Hack" better. I guess that makes the Producer of Metallicas new record a "Hack" in general.

I can't agree with your assessment of what a producer is. Since when did knowing everything about sound engineering etc. become a requirement?

With the right people and business skills and a bank roll anyone can be a producer. You just need to know how to rely on people and delegate responsibilities as needed.

For example, last year my wife and I produced 3 Christmas plays relying on others for their skills. We got a 4th year college student from the drama dept to direct the play. She got some friends from her class to do the scenery. We formed committees with volunteers to chair and administrate casting, costumes, etc...
We got volunteers to build the stages(5 of them), hired a chef (they were dinner plays) and I did the sound.

Now my wife had none of the skills needed for the play nor any of the ones you mentioned but without her skills, none of this would have happened. Do you want to be the one to tell her she isn't a producer?

I understand what you are saying but there isn't any rules for being a producer and I don't think it is doing anyone any harm for peeps to call themselves one.

Of course calling what some people produce music is a whole other story :D

Actually a producer is anyone who produces anything. Audio production, video production... these are all done by producers of the content. Now... if you want to talk about people who call themselves "engineers", thats a different matter. But there are PLENTY of top level albums with producers listed who know NOTHING about music. Do you know what an executive producer is? Money guy, thats it. Doesn't need to ever turn a knob or even be at a session or event. So I'd argue that alomst everyone on this board is a producer.

Then I am a Producer !!!!! I knew it !!!!! I feel so much better. Sorry RAMI, I am what I am :)

I think it was obvious who my comments were directed at.
Loading pre-recorded "beats" into your pirated DAW in your Mama`s basement does NOT make you a "PRODUCER".

I gave 3 examples of people who have earned the title of producer in the music business. Executive producer is a different thing.

Yes, producing a good crap in your toilet would technically make you a "Producer", but I think you guys are playing stupid for the sake of argument. Fair enough. I stand by post 100%.

When I was browsing the thread headlines, this one showed as 'Stop Calling Yourself...' and my immediate thought was " Please, let this be about all the Script-Kiddie 'Producers' that keep popping up".

Sho-Nuff! :)

'You must spread some rep around before giving to Rami again...'

:D

And can someone tell me where this term "make beats" came from?

I use canned jingle stuff all the time, but I call it what it is... canned jingle music. (And yes, royalties are covered). ;)

I knew EXACTLY what Rami was talking about, even before he got to this:
...Loading pre-recorded "beats" into your pirated DAW in your Mama`s basement does NOT make you a "PRODUCER". Find a different title.

RIGHT ON!

But I think the only person a pimply-faced 19-year old kid is kidding when he calls himself a "producer" is... a 18-year old, pimply-faced girl who lacks the self-esteem to look for someone better.

Hell, I have actually produced bands....and I still don't call myself a producer.

awhile back i did some work with thetype you're railling against and i agree for the most part with all you said... curiously enough they came to the title with a reasoned ignorance... producer in the dictionary would not include pictures of any of the guys you mention or any of the guys i dig... but since the beat didn't exist before... I's tha producer...

I would say a record producer is someone that can advise, direct, or push the artist during the recording process. I don't think all producers have the engineering qualities or the know how on mic techniques, use of the equipment, etc.....

YOU CAN ONLY PLAY OPEN CHORDS ON GUITAR

DONT CALL YOURSELF A GUITARIST

(pathetic)

If you have loaded up some beats and loops into a sequencer and mix them, and arrange them, and direct the music to attain some kind of intended result

you have produced something.

just dont call yourself a PRO

not that im a producer im a rapper, but dont give me that shit i know dudes who have learnt there craft and have every right to call themselves producers

tit

bitch try tellin cats like drdre n timbo aint producers
wack ass

The thing is, producer has a double meaning today. In rap music, 'producer' is a fancy name for 'beat maker.' It's pretty much how being a software engineer and a mechanical engineer are completely different. A rap producer makes rap beats. A producer in any other genre does what you are describing. Also, producer doesn't mean "master." It's someone who does know a lot, but doesn't always have to know everything about everything, like you're saying.

HAHAHA! My, how we get defensive when we feel the truth has cut right through us.:p

That's funny. I never said anything about Hip-Hop. The fact that you assumed I did should tell you something right there.:)

I never said anything about Dr. Dre. Read my post again. I obviously typed too fast for you. :D :D :D

I find it interesting how, when you throw a rock into the ocean, it only hurts the fish that it happens to hit. :D :D :D
