Hello...was going thru a bunch of stuff on my pc and came across this Hendrix cover I tried awhile ago and thought it would be cool to finish it...the vocals suck but here it is anyways.Any mix critiques or comments would be real cool!
Stone Free

Oh hell yea!

Great job! I like the pace. Relaxed and groovin!!

Nice job on the crazy wah-wah!

I gotta get one of those, Dave

Swwwwweeeeeeeeeet! Very cool! :D Can't resist the wah pedal either!

Nice. I've always loved this tune. I wasn't sure if I was going to hear "Stone Free" or "Stone Free Again". Which is quite different. This is awesome, man. Nothing like live sounding drums, too. I really dig this. Too bad I'm going out tonight. I would have pulled out all my old Jimi cassettes and CD's and had me a 60's night. Awesome solo and guitar sound. I dig it.

Samoken, dude.....That was killer. If you ever need a really bad singer, just to make you feel better about your voice, let me know. I don't charge much, and you'll feel that much better about yourself.... :D

All kidding aside, man, I love this tune. You did a great job. I've heard some of your stuff before, and it smokes.....(compliment)....

Digging this. Very raw sounding. I could picture you playing this live....

Just wanted to say thanks to evreybody posting the kind words on this...I was obssessed with Hendrix growing up and listened to his music constantly...funny tho, all the bands Iv'e been in have done very few Hendrix covers...this is the 1st one Iv'e tried doing the 1 man band thing.Used a PODXT live and a Fender '95 strat+ deluxe with lace sensor p.u.'s/floyd rose.Drum loops were cakewalks drumatic smartloops. Thanks again for listening!

Hey man this sounds nice! How did u record the drums?

Thanks!...the drums are actually drum loops from Cakewalks Drumatic set.I just import a straight beat into my drum track in Guitar Tracks pro3,then copy it a bunch of times...enough to kinda lay the groundwork for the whole song I'm doing,I will usually then lay down a scratch guitar track of the basic song..just enough to kinda feel the songs direction, ithen lay down the bass guitar and go back to rthym guitars, leads, vocals and just build the song up...when Im happy with that I will go back and cut parts of the drums out and insert fill, cymbal crashes etc..try to give the fills a bit of gain to make em stick out a bit and sound a bit more real..sorry for the log winded explanation but this is what works best for me...
Thanks for checking out the tune!!

Great geetar playin'! Nice tone too.

Yeah the vocals though ... There's no easy way to say it, but you were singing in the wrong key literally the entire time.

I'm not trying to be rude, and if you have no desire to be a singer then disregard it entirely. But if you do want to be a singer, however, that's another story.

You've got a cool-sounding voice, though; it was just out of tune the whole time.

Anyway, like I said, great guitar work.

ha! thanks man I really appreciate the honesty!!I am really new to singing and this song was alot harder then I thought ...I am just gonna keep working at it tho!I just do this kinda for my own entertainment hobby thing so there is no delusions of granduer involved :) !I just gotta find that right key when I sing...
Thanks again for the feedback...It helps to hear other peoples thoughts.ideas!!

Man, I have found many songs seem easy to sing to in my mind, but when you really go to do it, that all changes. I've been trying really hard, and had some friends help me, but it still is extremely hard. But, you figured out the magic formula....keep working on it. Practice is the only thing that seems to help. Wish it were easy, but then I might be a good singer.... :D

I hear you...I thought this one was kinda easy cause it seems like Jimi just kinda mumbles the lyrics during the verse...starting to do a lot more back up singing in my real band and that seems to help ...Yup, if it was easy, evreyone would be doing it!

I wasn't bothered by the vocals at all. They are a little low, which i do to myself all the time myself 'cause I hate my voice, but yours sound alright to me.
Go figure.

If you think these vocals are bad, then you havn't met the last singer in my band....

Variaxman is the first to admit he's still learning to sing well, as we all are, but that was not in the "wrong key". A few notes might have been off, but it was sung in the right key and only a little worse than Jimi's vocals.

Well, I understand that he's still learning, and I didn't mean to be harsh, but this statement is simply untrue.

If you compare Jimi's vocal with this vocal, you'll find that he's off just about the entire time (maybe as much as a 4th lower). Actually, the very first line was the best of all, but once the first chord change came around, it never really recovered.

I'm not saying that every note he sang was "out of key" (for instance, he may have sung an A note, which is still "in the key" of E); it's just that they were not the same melody notes that Jimi sang. He was consistently several notes flat pretty much after the first line.

At any rate, Variaxman, you have the right attitude. Practice and more practice. Make sure you record yourself often to chart your progress.

Hey man..not to harsh at all!I really apreciate the honest opinions and thoughts from evreybody as all people have different taste, feelings and ways of approaching things musically.
Its funny you say the 1st line is the best...that was one of the lines that I had the hardest time doing...just the cadence or rthym of his vocal really threw me off and I had to stop and restart so many times!!
I did remix the tune as a few people suggested that the bass guitar and the general bottom end of the tune was kinda lacking...check it out if your interested..vocals are still the same for now but I think I'm gonna get the singer from my real band to lay down some vox for me on this..
Thanks again for posting!!

Well, sweet again. You should sing this, if you like singing. You are only going to get better, and I actually like this version. Very raw. I know Famous Beagle wasn't Dogging( :D ) you on this, just giving his input. You do it different than Hendrix....that's all. If you want to hear bad, I could sing it for ya.....

Anyway, I like this cover, and think you should try and develop it in your way, and if you want to sing it, just do. If you want someone else, go for it. The playing, and sounds of the mix are cool, and I like it. I think what RAMI said was due to him knowing how hard it is to sing....probably the hardest thing to actually learn to do right, and he is giving you props for doing this, and might have thought Famous meant harm, as some people can be pretty nasty here. I know I have been trying quite a bit to develop my voice, and it don't come easy... :D

thanks for the kind words....years ago, when I was real serious about trying to "make it" in music,I could not take any criticism about my guitar playing/compositions,which,upon looking back, probaly really hindered my musical growth.I guess I've kinda mellowed and grown a bit wiser(I hope!) with age and really take feedback as a chance to learn and hear my music thru someone elses ears...now,I may not agree totally with what someone may say,but I really value there opinion.I guess as you grow more confident in your self, you don't take things so personally.I will keep plugging away at it and as long as I'm having fun,and some people dig the music I make..it's all cool, and I think, with this attitude, the music will improve cause I'm not freaking on what other people think or say.
Do you have any tunes out there?I bet your voice is not as bad as your making it out to be!If you wanna try singing this one let me know...I could post a vocal-less version up there for you to download.
Thanks again!

Man, that sounds great!!!! :D
When I read how you did the drums, I couldn't believe it!!! Great work w/ the loops!!! As a guitar player w/ a 1 man studio, that's always my biggest challenge, and usually I end up letting the drums dictate the song...

Nice guitar playing too.... I got back in to wah pedal (yesterday!!), after not having/using one for 15 years.... I dig it... alot!! In my case, it helps cover up sloppy, poorly constructed improvised solos!!!
