Hi guys,

Recently I have posted a thread about choosing between apogee mini-me and a lucid ad2496 with grace 101. Now - I have almost decided to go for the mini me (two channels and a compresor, but not too flexible- and those two screw on front...) , but recently thought that the combo Mytek adc96 and RNP would be even better and more flexible choice. What do You think about it? Are the Mini Me pres comparable to the rnp?

Peace

the more I dig in this forum the more options are crossing my mind. I guess money is the problem  Now- Fletcher You suggested Mini-Me - is that because the pre's quality better than the fmr or convertr quality better than the mytek?

Today I also came up with one more configuration - Mytek + Great River (the one channel model) it would cost me more, but I guess that would be better right? In this configuration I would only have one channel, but I am mainly recording vocals. the other stuff (some synths) I could record thru the Mackie Onyx pres which ar usable. What do You think about that?

To sum up things. Whats best?
1) Mytek + Great River
2) Mytek + rnp
3) Mini Me (do I really have to adjust those tiny screws every time I run a line level signal thru this unit? thats the only issue that keeps me off that thing...)

Cheers

Totally puzzled,dazed and confused,

Marty

Only if you want to check the calibration. "Tiny screws" denote a fixed calibration on the line input so you don't have to constantly adjust the unit's input. The idea is that once you have calibrated the unit to take a uniform +4 input you're done with the calibration process [check it every few months or if you see something amiss between the left and right levels... other than that it's set it and forget it].

FWIW... I don't necessarily think the Mini-ME sounds better than the Mytek I just think I'd rather rip my teeth out one at a time with a pair of channel lock pliers than have to try to deal with Mytek if a repair is necessary.

I've known Mihal [Mr. Mytek] for quite a while now and have a ton of respect for the product he has created... but it's easier to find Batman than Mihal. There was one time I couldn't get a return phone call from him for 3 weeks!!! Now if I had a converter, the main converter in my studio and it was down for more than like 3 days [a day to overnight it to the factory, a day to burn in the repair, and a day to overnight it back to me]... I'd be getting the thing out of my life as quickly as possible.

If Mihal ever gets his shit together I could recommend Mytek products without trepidation... but until then I will have to recommend that people avoid them unless they really like long periods of downtime and added stress in their lives.

Peace.

As for repair i think that i would be screwed anyway, cause in Warsaw, whatever product You try to fix, (apogee or Mytek) it takes weeks...

Anyway- I have one more question- do You think that the Great River ME NV1 is lot better than Mini-Me pre's? I mean night and day? I know it could go forever- the Mini Me vs other pres thing, but I have narrowed my search to those two- a Mini Me or Great River+ good converter (believe it or not but I also thought about the ART DIO for the converters).
The thing is I want to have one (preferably two) pristine pre's that could deal greatly with vocals (mainly), synths (sometimes) and bass (rarely) and a good hi end converters- I have 2000$ for it.

One more thing came to my mind. If I use Minie Me as a master clock, is the clock signal coming via spdif, so I can clock my Vs1880 with it for example?

I would grerrreatly appreciate helpa as I am exhasuted- I though I knew I almost knew a combination and today my buddy who copes with mastering told me that instead of a preamp + converter I should first get a preamp+mic.........

I was wondering what you ended up doing... Did you get the Mini-Me, and if so how does it sound?
