Still new at this, What equip. do I need?

Hey guy's, hows it going? Listen, I need some help here! I'm looking to get a good studio set up here. I'm running sonar, I'm looking at the Delta 1010 for my sound card. I quess my question is, do I still need a external mixer with pre amps? I know the delta 1010 has 8 audio in and 8 audio out but some how I keep getting confused on this point. Right now I'm tring to go through a peavey unity series 300 mixer. Basically only has main outs. I'm going into a D-man 2044 (4ins and 4 outs). The way I'm set up now it seems I can only get two tracks if I'm tring to do a live performence. I want to be able to record guitars to sep. tracks, bass to sep. track, drums to maybe more than a couple tracks ect. ect. What am I missing here?

Thanks A1MixMan, I went to the post didn't even read it all but I seen the idea and started messing around. Even on this peavey mixer and my D-Man I have 4 tracks I can record at once just going thru the patch bay. What I would like to know though, It seems I can't plug the 1/4" plug all the way into the patch bay, if I do I lose the meters on the mixer. I quess that might not matter though because I have the meters in Sonar. But I thing I lose the EQ also when I plug them in all the way. What do ya think... oh and thanks again
 
i just looked at your mixer

while i've never been a huge fan of peavey mixers, I just looked at a .pdf of the mixer you specified, and you can get more usefullness out of what you have.

the D-man is a 4 in/out card, and you've got 4 input/insert channels with built-in pre's on the peavey mixer.

using a TRS cable (Y-cable with a stereo 1/4" plug on one end and 2 mono 1/4" plugs on the other end) you can connect the output cable of the TRS to the input of your D-man in 1, and connect the input cable of the TRS to the output of you D-man out 2. then do the same thing for 2, 3, & 4.

Then you can record 4 tracks at a time.

personally, i would get a 16 channel mixer with mic-pre's on each channel and the delta 1010. i have the mackie 1604 vlz and the frontier design tango24/wavecenter. a mixer with inserts on each channel gives you the ability to track every channel individually or sub-group the drum channels to 2 tracks.

for instance, in a live situation with an 8 track recorder:

chan1 -> track1 lead vocal
chan2,3,4 -> track2 back vocals
chan5 -> track3 lead guitar
chan6 -> track4 rhythm guitar
chan7 -> track5 keyboard
chan8 -> track6 bass
chan9-16 -> tracks 7&8 percussion

channels 8-16 break down as follows
chan8 kick
chan9 snare/hat
chan10 low tom
chan11 mid tom
chan12 high tom
chan13 overhead L
chan14 overhead R
chan15 some other percussion
chan16 some other percussion

the above assumes that the lead, rhythm, and keyboardist sing backup, because we all know drummers can't sing... ha-ha
 
Crosstudio, that's what I'm talkin' about. I wasn't thinking about a 16 track but I think I see your point. I was thinkin' 8in, 8 out get a 8 track mixer(well 8 inputs with pre amps) I like your idea. Thanks

Can you explain what is meant by a mixer with inserts...with the ability to track every channel....

This subject is close to my heart at present cos I'm thinking my upgrade/equipment purchase strategy. I don't have any mixer....yet. Also, whats the difference between 16 track and 16 channel? In your post you described how a typical 8 track mixer could be configured...and then went on to list 16 channels!

I am also thinking about whether a mixer with or without fx is the best for me. What would be the deciding criteria?
 
CROSSTUDIO, I want to make sure I understand what you where saying about the TRS(Y cable). Are you saying to put the 1/4" sterio side into the insert(patch) on the mixer, then one end of the mono part of the (Y cable) to input 1 on the D-Man, and the other side of the mono(Y cable) to output 2 on the D-Man? Somewhere I know I got confused...
