What is Steve Vai's best work. What CD is best to listen too.

"Eat 'em and smile" by David Lee Roth. He also did some pretty cool stuff at the end of the movie "Crossroads."

Passion and Warfare

is undoubtably the definitive work.

some would say his most recent regular release, the double live cd he made touring the world a couple of years back, would be his best work.......

but, p&w's got all the stuff. though it's a bit dated.

Crossroads it is. When I watch that movie I just fastfoward to the end and listen in amazement.

I'll 2nd eat 'me and smile.

Passion and Warfare was good. A bit over my head at times though.

I have Flexible and it was good when it came out because it was so out there.

Shoot me, but I really dig his stuff with Whitesnake.

I've listened to Passion & Warfare, but didn't really like it. Too new-agey for me. The only stuff I've really heard from him that I like is his stuff with Zappa, which makes my neck hairs stand up.

His playing with Whitesnake was pretty tasty, on the album "Slip of the Tongue"....

I agree, but (IMO) the live versions of those songs kick ass.

For The Love Of God and The Attitude Song off the G3 video are smoking.

Another vote for Eat 'Em and Smile.

IMHO, Vai is best when he is in a supporting role. His own stuff is just a little too out there for me.

My thoughts exactly.Especially when he's got a kick ass bass player to riff with.DLR took too much control on Skyskraper. It had 2 or 3 good songs but, doesn't hold a flame to Eat 'Em.

l"ittle too out there.." Definition: sucks big time / disapointing at best.

I agree that he's best as a hired gun.
I like the life he kicked back into Whitesnake on "Slip of the tongue". ("Eat'em and smile" is a great record too.)

I recall reading an article some years back about how he had retained all the rights (Or something) to his first few records and was getting like $10.00 out of every $15.00 CD sold!
Pretty nice cash!!!

steve vai's best work was on the g3 tour.....when his guitar wasn't intonated perfectly, and his harmonic wouldn't ring JUST right, so he stopped the song halfway through, stepped up to a mic and stated "my guitar tech fucked this up, he's gonna have fix it before we finish", threw his guitar at the tech and stormed offstage. crowd waited 15 minutes for music to start back up. great performers do things like that i guess (and don't use backup guitars??)
