How do you record in Stereo on Cool Edit. Right now, I just have my Soundblaster soundcard, and I'm using the "LINE IN." But I can't put two mics into the line in. Those of you who record in stereo, how do you do it? Thanks!

I'm assuming you have two mics and a pre amp. the line in should be a 1/8 stereo mini jack. radio shack sells cables that have two RCA plugs into a stereo mini jack. get that and some adapters that change the RCAs into 1/4 phono. of course if you dont have a pre amp and 2 mics it wont work.

Stereo:

First of all forget going into your soundcard. I ran into the same problem a long time ago and I didn't want to buy a new sndcard so what You will need to do is buy a US-122 TASCAM USB/MIDI INTERFACE for around $200.00. It's well worth the money; trust me I love it. It plugs into your computer using one of your usb ports. It's really simple to setup I just run two 1/4'' good quality cables out of my Fostex VF08 Recorders Left and Right Outs' into the L/R Inputs on the Tascam Midi Interface which will transfer it in stereo into your computer, It's that simple. Hope this helps ya out....

Yeah you won't be able to without a preamp eg. mixer.
From the mixer you can then go into the soundcard and record in stereo.

Well, you can record in stereo from the Line In, if you have a stereo signal going into the line in, that is. For example, you can record stereo effects on a guitar. Just set the multitrack that you're recording on to "stereo" instead of LEFT or RIGHT.

But if you're talking about actual mics, yeah...you need more than one input on your soundcard, or an external mixer....

....or a preamp with 2 outputs (like a DMP3)...I do that...then run both of the outputs to an adapter that narrows down into a 1/8" input to the soundcard. Set one of the tracks to record LEFT and another one to record RIGHT if you want to have control over each of them.

I actually have a DMP3. I just have no idea what converter will take two 1/4" cables and narrow it down to one 1/8". And I'm not clear on how to separate them at recording time in cool edit.

All you do is get an adaptor or ready made cable that has 2 x 1/4" mono cables on one end and the other end has a 1/8" stereo.
The 1/4" jacks go into outputs A and B of you DMP3. The stereo 1/8" jack goes into the line-in of your soundcard.

And I'm not clear on how to separate them at recording time in cool edit.

In CEP, the recording inputs for Track 1 would be the LEFT side of the line-in. Track 2 would be the RIGHT side of the soundcard's line-in.

That way channel A from the DMP3 would go into the LEFT side of the line-in and onto Track 1. And channel B would go RIGHT side and then onto track 2.
