stereo vs mono clips in sonar

This might seem like a stupid question, but what the hell: what is the difference of having a mono clip panned 30% left, and a stereo clip panned 30% left? Basically why have mono vs. stereo clips before you actually mix to stereo?

Yeah, I think it's silly. And I'm not sure how panning would be applied to it. I'd consider a stereo clip to already be panned and just leave it the way it is.
 
natedizzy - there is a difference. A stereo piano track for example is actually two tracks and could be made up of 2 - 6 mikes. When you pan a stereo track you change the balance between the two tracks ....... so you can increase the low end of the stereo piano for example. You might create a stereo guitar track by putting the close mike half left and an ambience mike half right. you can then vary their balance by using the pan.

John, would'nt that depend on where you place the microphones? I mean, if you record a guitar and place one mic near the guitar and another further away, the pan would controll the reverb.

It should also be said that you have to let one mic record to the left chanel, and the other to the right...

I'm just a little curious...
 
Take as an example the o/heads on drums. One is panned left and the other right OK?? If you record them as a stereo track (one mike left - one mike right) the pan will then determine the balance between the mikes. i.e. full left is left mike, full right the right mike - in the centere both mkes.
