First things first, I posted this to both "Computer Recording" and "Mixing/Mastering" because I'm note really sure where it belongs.
Anyway, on a Beatles list I'm on someone said that they were able to extract a 5.1 mix from a stereo recording. He said that used a stereo oops for the rears, and was able to seperate the left, center, and right channels, plus of course the bass. He said this can be done on any song, but despite many pleas is not telling anyone how he did it. Anyone have info on this?

It's probably just some software or hardware the creates fake surround sound. There is no way to get a true surround mix unless there is some type of DTS or DOLBY encoding in the recording.

He posted the left, center, and right channels, and they truly are seperated.

He lies like a cheap hooker...:) That or he has know idea what he's talking about.

It is impossible to create true 5.1 from a stereo recording. Its just as impossible as seperating a vocal track from its background music.

If anything, its faked as Tex mentioned. Done with crossovers and other frequency mods.

You can use Dolby Pro Logic to mimic surround, but it doesn't sound good on Beatles recordings. At least on my system. Try Dark Side of the Moon though. Pro Logic actually does a convincing job of "surround".
