i've read a million posts about stereo recording acoustic guitars...

well - i just got my 2 MXL603s in the mail today, so I can actually try something out finally.

In techniques like this:

how do you know how to pan? just pan the same (L/R) make the left and right ears equal in volume?

i mean, if I just put the mics in different places, with no pan, its no big difference to me...lol

It depends on how wide you want the stereo field.

Experiment with different pan locations. I usually opt for somewhere between 9-3 and 10-2.

Stereo micing

For real stereo micing like you're talking about (two mics on one source, XY or whatever), I'd usually pan full left and right. That would be the starting point, anyway. If it's all by itself, that would probably be the ending point. If it has to sit in a mix with other stuff, I would probably fool around with the relative volumes, or the panning of one or the other, to get it to sit right with the other stuff.

Distinguish this from the situation where you're panning something that's notstereo miced (i.e. the instrument appears on one track): I would generally think of panning this beyond 3 or 9 as a sort of "effect."
