I need a studio pair of microphones for recording classical music recitals in a big hall. I'm running Pro Tools LE with a Digi 003. These are my only current mic preamps and may be my only mics for now. Which mics would you go with and why? Would you go with small diaphragm instead?

Thanks for your help!
Daniel

I have a KSM44, but haven't used the T3. It's popular with people here who own it, but I don't recall if anyone has posted about using it for classical music.

Personally, for bit more, I would buy one KSM44 and two KSM141s, which is indeed what I own. I used to have a third KSM141, but I didn't use it much so I'm down to two now. For a three mic setup, it's more flexible to have the KSM141 pair for mains and the KSM44 for a soloist mic. You can also run M/S (which I don't do much), or a version of Decca tree.

If limited to two mics, I'd pick the KSM141s.

Great. Thanks for the advice. I was looking into the small diaphragm mics as well. I could see how a 3 mic setup could work great. Any other opinions or advice?

Thank you!

Rather different mics. Of the two, the Shure would be a better choice for chamber music. But other mics may do even better. Consider decent small diaphragm mics.

For your application, I would prefer a pair of small diaphragm mics, such as Shure SM81. Think of them as the little glass viewport in a hotel door. They see big because they are small. The KSM44 is an excellent mic, which can be used as the figure of 8 mic in an MS pair. For your application, it makes a very good spot mic. For instance, if you have a solo on an instrument with a fairly soft voice, such as a harp. In your general price range, I would consider a less expensive pair of small diaphragm mics, such as Studio Projects C-4's or Rode NT-5's, or SM81 if budget permits, and one KSM44. That would allow you to use MS micing, or the 2 SD's as a spaced or coincedent stereo pair, and the KSM44 as a spot mic or a single omni. I've done that with very good results, using the omni right in the middle of an orchestra, blended with the stereo pair. Good luck-Richie
