stereo/mono trouble in cakewalk 9...

When I switch from stereo to mono (in the options/audio set up menu) and then arm the track,the level immediately pins .This happens even when nothing is plugged into my computer (ie:USB connection from the M-Audio Quattro,Aux in for the return).It work fine when I have it in stereo but in mono...nothing but a pinned led meter and no sound at all?Any and all suggestions would be appretiated.Thanx ahead of time.
