Stereo linked?

Okay... my question is about how stereo linking on compressors works...

Okay... on a stereo linked comp.. is it just two channels with linked settings.. or is the actual compression linked...

that kinda sounds confusing so I'll use an example... say I've got a mix running through it and a huge peak comes through one channel of it (but NOT on the other channel) Will both channels be compressed or only the one that got the peak?

Thanks for any help

linking allows you to control the settings with one side of the comp's controls but it dosent link the input/outputs.
