I have recorded with multitple tracks and using two seperate tracks for right guitar and left guitar. It works fine, but I have guitarists that come here that can't play exactly along with what they first recorded. I tried adding effects to one of the channels and just recording the amp with two mics on right and left channels. It worked somewhat, but wasn't as full as when I recorded right and left completely seperately. Are there other devices or techniques besides effects to help me with this?

If you're NOT recording to analog tape(it won't work),you could try making a copy of the track and then shift the timing of the track a couple of milliseconds, and pan them but not totally(maybe 9:00 and 3:00).If it's not enough, run the clone through a pitch shifter with just a modicum of detune(like 1 or 2 cents. That'll give you both timing and pitch variation. You could also run the clone track out to a different amp,use a different mic on it,and EQ it differently.Cheers!

right on Virtual Ray - the delay has to be greater than 18ms to make the clone sound like a separate gtr and pitch change up and down will also add to it.

Try sending the guitar to a delay set very short (50ms.) Dry guitar panned one way and the delay the other. Useing a pitch shift of a few cents will do the same thing.

thanks for all the advice. I use digital equipment. Is this how professional studios do it, by adding effects?

Both ways and a few that haven't been discussed.

I have a professional studio and I'll tell you that delay is the way to go! so do'nt think it's just home recorders who use this technique! Try using something like a 15ms delay on the guitars and space it using a stereo width enhancer. There are a few rack effects which will help you with this. Every milliesecond you increase makes a lot of difference to the tone of the stereo guitar track you're trying to achieve. Chorus will also help you a lot. just small amounts though!
