Trailing Behind Again
I'm looking for a DirectX plug-in that will expand the stereo field in my mixes. I am trying to match how broad the stereo field is on pro CD's.

Anyone have an idea what I can look for? I don't wanna mess with VST's...

What do you mean you don't wanna mess with VSTs?

Even though you don't want to, I'm going to recommend mdaStereo cause it's free and it can really widen the stereo field. Not sure how it'd sound on a full mix but I use it on mono tracks and it sounds great.

The description says it uses the Haas effect.

I have a VST Wrapper, but I don't know how well it works.

Where can I get that plugin?

Make sure you double check the mix in mono, to make sure the plugin isn't messing with mono compatibility.

Try this. Do a bounce of your mix with one side out of phase (ie. flip the L channel out of phase). Now do a mono bounce of your mix.

Open a new session, and import both bounces. what you'll have is on the one hand the difference between L and R, and the other the sum, so you'll be able to boost the stereo width by turning up the difference..

That's a really cool trick. I am going to try it.

I installed that plugin, and my VST wrapper is working fine. I played with it a little bit, but I am going to go back and check out the mono mix.

That plugin also has a faux stereo setting. I didn't pay attention to that when I first started messing with it, and I almost deleted it because I didn't like what it was doing.

Thanks for the tip!

it works quite well to expand the stereo image - however you'll probably find that it brings up the reverb levels too..

Bingo! That wasn't a big problem, though. I just brought them down to compensate...
