Stereo Connector Question

Hi --

I needed to solder a stereo microphone cable to a 1/4 inch (3.5 mm) stereo plug. The mic cable has two red and two yellow wires, plus shielding. Is this the right way?

red 1 --> tip of plug
red 2 --> ring of plug
yellow 1+2 --> sleeve of ring

it sounds as if the XLR is already on the cable... right?? if it is then you need to open the xlr and see how it is wired.... otherwise doing it as you've suggested will work assuming you handle the other end properly... you see you didn't ask about the xlr and that's important that you get the mic in phase... ie: the tip of the 1/4 should go to the #2 pin on the xlr... the ring goes to #3 and then the sleeve goes to #1....

This will be an unbalanced 3.5mm stereo plug (for a camcorder) on a stereo mic (Audio Technica 24Pro). The cables that are coming out from the mic has two pairs of red and yellow wires, plus a shield. Do you think the above (from my post) will work??

It's *probably* yellow to tip, red to ring, and shield to sleeve. That's just a guess though . . .

Is the cable fixed toy the mic, or is the cable plugged into the mic?

It's *probably* yellow to tip, red to ring, and shield to sleeve. That's just a guess though . . .

I did that, but I only got a mono signal. Maybe my soldering skills are a bit rusty ...

So that would be different from what you say, no?

Well, you still have the basic problem of four conductors and only two pins. AT uses yellow for signal and red for power, I guess you could try red 1 and yellow 1 to tip, red 2 and yellow 2 to ring, if you can tell which is which . . .
