stepping up to 96/24 recording -- advice?

hi there --

right now I use the Roland VM3100Pro interface which has 8ins/out at 44kHz/24bit. Cost me $700 about a year ago. While 24bit significantly improves the sound compared to 16bit, I'd like to step up to 96kHz bandwidth. The problem is: I only have a budget of $500.-

Any idea if I could get a 96/24 setup with this rather small budget? I needed a mixer and soundcard. Any advice out there what I should get? Thanxxx a ton!
 
Why do you want to step up to 96kHz? Because everybody else seems to have it? You should be able to get a lot of mileage out of 24/44.1. Especially with the genres you have put in your profile. You'd probably improve more on your sound if you put that $500 towards a really good (or nice) preamp or mic.

I track at 24/48.... I certainly have no trouble getting good sound from that resolution!
 
so you think the difference between 24/44.1 and 24/96 would not be worth the upgrade?

the thing is: I want to improve the sound of my recordings and have a budget of $500 for that. Keep in mind that I'm into electronica and that I only occasionally record vocals and my sax. I already have a decent pre (Focusrite Green) and mics (Neumann KM184 and Sennheiser 441).
 
If you're having trouble getting sound results at 24/44.1, then I suspect recording resolution is not your issue....

Suspect something in the signal chain (including the A/D converters) and/or your recording technique.
 
its not that I have bad sound quality. I just thought I should maximize the sound quality as good as I can. If y'all say 24/44.1 is fine, I'll stop worrying about it.
 
Don't forget the massive file sizes, the groans of your hard drives trying to keep up with the huge data flow, fewer plug-ins you'll be able to run and the reduced track counts you'll get at 96khz.

I'm sticking with 24bit/44.1 for now.
 
good point, Tim. You've convinced me that I'll stick to 24/44.1 for the time being. Even saved me some bucks ;)
 
i don't have a great set up, but i'm happy with the sounds i get and i do have some decent equipment. but i always find i want whatever i'm hearing a lot about. everyone wants one more thing, or the newest thing, or the most hyped new thing. i just realized if i'm happy then buying the new (insert favorite adjective) thing is just collecting gear, then i've become a collector not a musician.
 
I think I'm not a compulsive collector. :rolleyes: I just have some spare buxxx and was looking for ways to improve the sound quality of my songs. Overall, I am very happy with my setup. However, since my Roland VM3100Pro interface is clearly the weakest link in my signal chain, I was considering getting a 24/96 soundcard and a new analog mixer. I thought if I could do that for 500 buxx (e.g., getting Yamaha MG mixer or a Mackie, and an MAudio Delta 410 or something like this), I had a good setiup for many years to come. I find it important to add some nice gear once in a while if it expands your possibilities or improves the overall sound quality.
 
here's what I do when I feel the urge to get new gear: I just sit there and wait for one month or so. If I still desperately want it after a month, I decide to get it.
