I find stem mastering advantageous for Hip Hop and Rap projects where a client needs several masters of the same track e.g. "dirty", radio edit, a Capella, and instrumental.
I have to also say that when clients have given me both a stereo and stem tracks to master from, the stem version wins more often than the stereo and often requires less overall processing. Of course the better mixes or the mixes where a client nailed what he intended are the usual exceptions.
