Hello

I was wondering if anybody could tell me about this card
and breakout box. The quality, ease of use, etc.

Thanks Epi

I have no experience, but I hear the pres are worthless. ST Audio is usually really good, but I guess this unit isn't great. That's all I've heard, though. Might as well wait for another 6 months and get the System 3000.

cport

I have one - it sounds great and is way convenient where you may not need an external mixer depending on your application. It ships with Logic 24 which I use to do full blown recordings. A wave editor is a nice addition, though. The Cport was a little tricky to set up and get running smoothly, but I have an AMD with a via chipset which is known to be a bear, but I am recording 96Khz at 24 bits and am generally enjoying life. The pre amps: pretty weak volume wise, but they do provide phantom power on Ch 1 & 2. I currently use a MXLV67 through those preamps and do have to crank them up to 80% or better to get a good signal, but not too noisy. I will eventually get a pre amp. Overall, for the $ and the xtras, I think the Cport is a good deal. I paid 379US at marsmusic.com up to 399 now. And it handles midi, unlike some other audio cards.

A friend of mine has it, and I went by and played around with it one day. It's very clean sounding and very easy to work with. The fact that the outputs are in the back makes life a little more difficult but it's not something that would ruin your life (especially if you get a patch bay). The pres are just plain useless. They just don't do anything. You have to turn them almost all the way up to get a decent signal, and even then they don't sound like something you want to take home with you.
In conclusion - a very usable piece of gear, but only if you have an external mixer/pre amps. You really can't do much without them.

I'm very happy with mine, though I have nothing else to compare to. It's a well made unit, the rack mount ADAC is nice, and it's very affordable. I had no trouble installing mine and getting it to work, but I'm not using the VIA chipset. The manual is poor, but there is a good bulletin board on the ST Audio website for questions, and there is a very active discussion group in "Yahoo Groups".

Hey Twist - what chipset are you using with your Cport?

Old Faithful - BX 440 on an A-BIT mobo.

If you decide to buy one, e-mail me and I will get you the links to all the support pages that I have accumulated.

When I bought mine, the only other unit that I felt came close for features was the Delta 1010. But it's about $200 more. The pre-amps are good enough to get you started, and you can buy an external one later with the money you've saved.
