Hi,

I'm a mac user and have sought advice from other forums to no avail. The question is simple;

What do I need to get started recording on my imac?

I'm a musician and have microphones etc, but I have to say I don't understand what a sound card even is. When posting to forums, I usually am met with replies that go way over my head. There seems to be so much involved with computer recording that it is tempting to just get a digital workstation. Can anyone tell me what things I'll need to get started?

an IMAC? well jeez

ok well first things first....i'm sure your mac has a USB port i dont know if you know what that is but its a rectangle looking hexagon input. i think thats a normal mac input for recording on something like an Imac. now you can find some kind of recording device at http://www.americanmusical.com/sort.asp?keyword=ACM11&menu=0801&UID=2003092221202661&server= now that might go over your head too BUT! find a cheap recording device and some cheap software and get your kicks before you want to shell out the money for better stuff. starting cheap lessens the probability of expensive mistakes.

try going to the digidesign website and check out the digi 002, digi 001 or the m box. the site lists system requierments.
good luck!

Since you already have the mac, I would work with it as opposed to a stand alone system. No need to shell out more money than needed. Plus, it usually allows more flexibility.

Your best option is to go USB or firewire because I pretty sure you can't stick a standard soundcard in that thing. This is where you need to do research and find the option for you.

Look on musiciansfriend.com and others for computer recording/connections via USB and firewire. Then make sure you get software for recording with it or that the software you buy works with the hardware A/D device.

I wish I could afford the G5 !
If I were a Mac user I would probably...no definantly go with Logic 6 and Logic Control.
