Starting to buy the goods.

Today, if you were going to buy a reasonably priced interface and mixer what would it be?

How about:

M-Audio FireWire 1814 Computer Recording Interface 18-in, 14-out audio interface?

and

Bheringer MX3242X Eurorack Mixing Console

device? preamp, mixer, patchbay, computer interface, snake...
actually seeing as it's under computer recording and soundcards, I'll guess it's the computer interface, do you want it to be all one unit? need more info.

Sorry, I've clarified.

If I was buying today, I'd probably forego the mixer and just get the Presonus Firepod. 8 channels with everything you need in a nice rack mount unit.
It's better value than the M-Audio unit, as 8 of those 18 inputs are Adat and you only get a couple of preamps

My desire is to be able to record live. Would that change it for you?

Also, what if you could get that M Audio 1814 for 479 bucks....

What about a Fostex D2424LV 24-Track Digital Recorder or the Tascam 2488 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation???

If you get the M-Audio unit you'll still need to get a mixer or a bunch of preamps.

You could probably score the firepod for under $600 at Sweetwater.

The firepod should work well live as it looks pretty portable. It fits a 1U rack so how heavy can it be?

GET THE FIREPOD....say it to yourself before you go to bed tonight, you wont regret it

Firepod, firepod, firepod....I think im getting the picture. I'll keep saying it to myself ;)

You guys have been helpful thanks for that!

You were asking about live recordings...This can be done with the Firepod easy..Check out this site to see how the Presonus guys did it.....pretty great sounding clips too...

heres how they did it..

Here's the PreSonus Recording Rig:

- FIREPOD
- Two Eurekas w/ AD192
- Central Station
- Mac G4 powerbook 800 - Recorded w/ Nuendo (big brother of Cubase LE)

We hung a pair of DPA microphones from the balcony for our room mics into the Eureka's. We used the Eureka AD192 digital output into the SPDIF input on the FIREPOD. Then we were given the following eight subgroups from the Front of House Console:
1 - Kick
2 - Snare
3 - Drum overheads and toms
4 - Bass guitar
5 - Lead vocal
6 - Keyboards
7 - Horns
8 - Guitar and Background vocals

We then ran the SPDIF output of the FIREPOD into SPDIF input on the Central Station for monitoring.

Front of house engineer, Ace Baker sent us great subgroups and when mixed with the room mics made for a great live recording.

You really dont even need the Eurekas for the room mics, well maybe in a band as big as this, but in your standard 4 piece rock band, you have more than enough headroom....

Ok I'm out of my league here. So what does the Eurekas do that I can not do without them. Sorry gents I'm learning as fast as I can.

Any thoughts on this:

Mindprint Envoice mic pre DI SPDIF instead of the Eureka

The Eureka is simply a channel strip with a preamp/compressor/eq. To answer your question, No, you dont need one. They used them to get an extra channel of audio out of the firepod. See the firepod really records 10 tracks a once- 8 lines, 1 track of midi, and 1 track of s/pdif (digital input). The two eurekas (one mic on each) were hooked up together, then sent into the firepod via that s/pdif digital input. All this did was enable them to get in this case 9 simulateonous inputs (no midi) instead of just 8. You could use any preamp with a digital output to do this, but I'm really not sure who all makes them. Once again, you dont HAVE to have any eurekas, they will just give you one more track

You rock, thanks for your help. Another question now. Do I need the control center. Mind you that I want everything to be the best eventually but I also want to know what I need barebones compared to best case. Thanks for the input.

I found a deal that on the Firepod that includes 8 Free 20 ft whirlwind cables and a free Sennheiser E835 mic. Seems like a good deal to me!

No you don't need the central station unit. That's just for creating lots monitor mixes.

That looks like a good deal. They should also be throwing in a copy of Cubase LE

Yeah it comes with Cubase. OK, well we are getting there for sure. Your help is greatly appreciated.

So with a Firepod, a board and some good mics we can get started. Now in the scenerio you sent me above what were they recording to?

Ok, just was reading this post here. Have a new question if anyone is willing to answer. After connecting your setup with Firepod and interfacing it with your computer/Cubase. Is it possible to record all inputs simultaneously on different layers in Cubase? Or does it kind of mix it down all into one?

I'm not all too familiar with this stuff yet, so thanks to anyone with any help!

It will record up to 10 "tracks" seperatley. Each track can be edited. Ex. You could record 4 drum tracks...kick, snare, 2 overheads. Each of these tracks is seperate from the other.

windwords-
yeah that setup is all you need, You really dont need the mixer, but for live recordings it will help. They were recording to a Mac G4 powerbook, that is what I use as well.

Ah very nice. What type of sound card would you recommend using with a Firepod? Anything relatively inexpensive that will still get the job done of recording non-professional sounds in the best way possible?

Thanks again!

Joe
