Starting. Please Help.

I had a Boss BR864 for about a year and a half and it crapped out on me. I just bought a Fostex MR8 and it is very hard to use and will not export to my comp. I am considering forgoing these types of consoles and trying a recording software preogram. My question is what else do i need? It seems like there should be some sort of adapter or something that i would need to use. Do I just use the mic out and put in a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter and then an 1/4" to xlr adapter to plug in a mic? Also it seems like the programs i looked at were just too good to be true. Cakewalk Soinar Home Edition was only $75. I spent $400 on my BR864 that seems like it did about the same thing. I'm just confused. What am i missing? It would help if you could list everything i will need to get started. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks

First, posting in more than one forum is called 'crossposting' and it's frowned upon here and on most other BBS's.

Second, there's a Fostex forum here and posting this question there would probably net you a quick answer. In a case like this one more crosspost is OK...
