Starting out...HELP!

Hi all,
I'm a performing musician who has been using the "traditional methods" of laying down my ideas and songs (Tascam 464 PortaStudio). Recently, I've decided to take the plunge and build a computer that will cover all of my home recording needs.

I want to be able to record, mix and burn my own music onto CD and need your expertise on what equipment will help me do the job. Give me some ideas as to what you think would be a system that would cover the basics and allow for expandability in the future, should I happen to want to do this on a more professional level (a.k.a. Make money at it! )

I've been looking through TigerDirect for the equipment and AMS for ideas but I'm sure there are better options out there for less. If not, that's ok too.....I just want to cut to the chase and get to recording ASAP.

I think the best approach is to start looking for a soundcard tailored specifically for audio recording (aka audio interface), because the specs of the card will determine what kind of computer you want to build.

In order to suggest a soundcard though, we need more info. How many instruments do you want to record at once? If it's just you, then you only need a card with 2 inputs unless you foresee recording multiple instruments simultaneously in the future. Also, how do you plan on mixing? Do you want to do all your mixing in the pc or do you want to use a mixer? If you are using a mixer then you will need more than 2 outputs.

Telling us how much cash you are willing to spend will also be helpful.

As far as the card goes, I've been looking through AMS but I'm really not sure what to look for in all truth. In my experiences, price will often dictate what your getting in return (unfortunately) but I don't dare sink a bundle into something that isn't needed.

As far as number of instruments recorded simultaniously, I would say 1-2 at a time (stereo channels on each) and maybe expand in the future to the point where I could record a full band live...

As far as mixing, I don't know the advantages of using a PC over a mixer, since this is all new ground for me. However, I should keep the options open just in case.

As far as how much cash I want to spend....of course as little as possible, but then again, you can only get so much bang for the buck....I guess I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to make a quality recording system. If there are things that could be skimped on, let me know and I'll mark that as optional.
