Hey all,

Im starting off recording drums, and im just wondering, can anybody tell me what mics they think are best, for micing the kit, and for overheards.
I've heard alot about a Shure SM57 for the snare,

help :)

thanks.

well...

i'm sure you'll be inundated by reccomendations soon, but the short course is that different drums require different microphones. Each drum or cymbal, really is a different instrument. I have my hands full with guitars and vocals tracking right now, but when i start in on drums...(and it does take patience...) I would monitor these forums, and listen to other peoples recordings where they are saying "hey...hows this sound...?...how can i tighten up the snare" and look and see what kind of mics, cymbals, micing positions (very important) and roiom types they are using, it will give you a idea what you will want. If you like their results,a nd you have similar drums, that seems obvious.

there are also kits of these microphones sold as a package deal, musicians friend website has them, i believe lasdt time i looked. Perhaps someone could reccomend a decent kit to get you started in one fell swoop. Be prepared to spend quite some time piddling around with mic placement, playing with room acoustics and so on. Getting the killer drum recording can be a bear.

seems like everyones got a differnet opinion on this subject.
Whats your budget?

100-300 range?
500-1000 range?

We cant help if you dont put out all the info.

But to to generalise it....
I like shure sm57's on any drums.
Or sennheiser md421's are good too.
Both are dynamic mics.

As far as kick mics go...
There are quite a few that will get the job done.
a 421 would work, ivwe heard rockin sounds from a sm57 too.
Audix d6, theres one thats shaped like an EGG! (but i cnt remember the name of it)

As for overheads...
I hear a lot of ppl praising the 0ktava condencers, but i dont own any so im not sure about that one.

Man, it would really help to know how much $$$ you want to spend though.

Hey thanks for all that :)

im looking from €100 - €300 for each mic, what ever way it works out.
