Starting gear

Hi... I wanna start recording some of my stuff, mainly guitar, bass and vocals. I also wanna to use some VST to record drums, synths, piano etc.
What do I need to starting doing this? I'm thinking about a mixer with some pre-amp to record the guitar... I'm also gonna use NI Guitar Rig to put some effects on it, specially distortion and overdrive, cause I have a crappy amp and it will sound awful if i mic it...
I'm planning to buy a Audiophile too... Is it good enough?
And could I use some good headphones for monitoring?

I think he's talking about the M-Audio Audiophile soundcard possibly, but I'm not 100% on that.

Tks for the book.... I've been reading a lot about this stuff over the internet, and learned a lot of things...
 
It's a good book. I wished I had it when I first started....would have saved me some dinero with gear that wasn't for me.
 
Alsol, read and search through these forums here. Many have already gone where you're looking to go. No need to reinvent the wheel.

it all depends on your budget and what you hope to have as an end product. if you just wanna record yourself for fun id say get some multitrack prog, a couple converter/pres, a couple nice mics and some monitors.

if your coming at it from the angle of wanting to record bands, yourself and plan on doing the constant upgrading that come with owning a studio id say get a used console, a 1/2" 8, 8 channels of convertors, good selection of mics, decent monitors, a couple decent comps and a reverb unit. this will give you a huge range of versatility and just by wiring all the crap up youd learn way more, faster, than you would with the little setup above.
